A Few Ronin Swords-For Hire
« on: May 26, 2014, 09:30:07 PM »
Kind of threw these together to mess around with, haven't gotten to play around with them that much but got a few games in with the Gaijin and one with the Miko. Both are more fictionally based than reality, the Gaijin is more from a certain character from Shogun, and the Miko draws a lot from myths and anime and as a semi-counter for some of the more game changing abilities that some of the supernatural creatures now useable have.

I'd posted them on the Ronin forum, but figured some people here might help spotting anything that might come into play.

Gaijin
Someone from another land, normally europe or even, possibly, the middle east or Africa. Most of these are sailors unfortunate enough to get stranded in the area, though there are also those in certain periods that may have arrived via the Silk Road and China.

Unlike those from nearby areas, their skills in combat are unorthodox and different in many ways that make them unpredictable.

They are often different, and quite visible as part of a Buntai...

Type: Sailor
Rank: 3
CP: 3
Init: 3
Fight: 2
Shoot: 3
Armor: Light
Points: 25
Weapons: Sword and Pistol
Attributes: Unorthodox Style, may take up to 2 additional Attributes for +3 points each
Options:
  • May upgrade Pistol to Brace of Pistols for +3 points
  • May be mounted on a horse for +10 points
Sword-For-Hire: One be hired by any Buntai, however a Buntai that captures this character gains +1 VP. The Gaijin gains +1 VP for Looting. Korean or Chinese Buntai may recruit 2.

Miko/Priest
With the various shrines scattered about the countryside and the various creatures such as Oni that prowl, various people have special training in dealing with such things.

Type: Miko
Rank: 4
CP: 3
Init: 4
Fight: 3
Shoot: 2
Armor: None
Points: 24

Weapons: Jo, may be equipped with a Yumi for +3 points
Attributes: Fearless, Hanafuda, Blessings, up to 2 additional attributes for +3 points each
Options:
  • May be upgraded to wearing Light armor for an additional 2 points
  • May be mounted for +10 Points
Sword-For-Hire: A single Miko or Priest may be taken by any Buntai that does not take non-human characters. If certain alternate Buntai such as the Conquistadors or similar without such traditions, then this character should not be taken.

New Attributes
Blessings:
Once per turn, you may reroll a single die when making a morale check. The better of the two rolls is used.
Hanfuda: Your Buntai ignores the effects of the Formidable attribute, and when this character deals damage to a non-human target (Such as those with the Oni, Tengu, Kappa, or Jorogumo type), the target suffers a -1 CP for each wound taken, even if that damage would be ignored with the Hard-To-Kill attribute.
Unorthodox Style: After all players involved in a combat with a character possessing this attribute distribute their attack and defense dice, this character may exchange one defense die for an attack die or one attack die for a defense die. If multiple characters in the combat possess this ability, use of it is triggered in reverse initiative order.

New Weapons
Sword:
As Katana
Pistol: As the Revolver save must be reloaded as a Teppo
Brace of Pistols: As Revolver

Worked out a few more for use.

Part of this one comes from a combination of wanting to use the unicorn war dogs from the Clan War range, and stumbling upon a set of real armor designed for some samurai's dog. There is also the hunting dogs such as the Matagi and Akita that were known for working to hunt bears...

While there are no real confirmed uses of wardogs, the presence of the armor is enough that they can be worked into even the more historical buntai.

Hunting Dog
Best known for hunting bears and other animals, the Akita and Matagi dogs were first domesticated to aid in hunting.
Type: Dog
Rank: 2
CP: 2
Initiative: 2
Fight: 3
Shoot: 0
Armor: None
Points: 15
Weapons: Teeth
Attributes:  Drag Down, Faithful, Swift

Sword-For-Hire: May be selected by any human only Buntai with a Rank 3+ model, you may have a number of Hunting & War Dogs equal to the number of non-dog models of selectable ranks.

War Dog
Trained for combat rather than just hunting, the War Dog is more capable in a fight.
Type: Dog
Rank: 3
CP: 3
Initiative: 3
Fight: 4
Shoot: 0
Armor: Light
Points: 25
Weapons: Teeth
Attributes:  Drag Down, Faithful, Swift, Yojimbo (Same target as the Faithful ability)

Sword-For-Hire: May be selected by any human only Buntai with a Rank 4+ model, you may have a number of Hunting & War Dogs equal to the number of non-dog models of selectable ranks.

New Attributes
Drag Down: When making a Disarm or Subdue attempt, the attack roll is boosted for free. Characters subdued by a character with this ability must make an additional Rank check before recovering if still adjacent to the character with this ability.
Faithful: Select a character in your Buntai of at least one rank higher than the character with this ability. As long as both characters are within 6" of each other and alive, this character gains the benefits of the Fearless attribute and both characters gain a +1 Defense. A character may only be effected by this ability from one other character (Unless possessing the Master of Hounds attribute)
Master Of Hounds: A buntai with a character having this ability may recruit Hunting and War Dogs for 1 less point each, and the character with this ability may have an additional dog attached to him with Faithful.
Swift: This character moves as if it were mounted.
