The Colonial Painting Expedition - 100 Miniatures
« on: June 02, 2014, 07:45:29 AM »
Gather round, O best beloved, for it is painting club time again. We present,

The Colonial Painting Expedition

The Royal Geographical Society has granted us sufficient funds to outfit a 100-strong expedition into the interior. This time we are not searching for the source of the Nile, but the source of something far more important and valuable. That most elusive of prizes: painting inspiration.

So we're looking for recruits. We'll need Explorers and officers, porters and askari, soldiers and sepoys, warriors and tribesmen, fakirs and missionaries, mullahs and witchdoctors, native chiefs and potentates, and sultans wearing roller skates...

And elephants and Afrikanders,
And politics and Salamanders,
And Germans seeking to annoy,
And horrible rhinoceroi,
And native rum in little kegs,
And savages called Touaregs
(A kind of Soudanese).

Er, sorry. Came over all Hilaire Belloc there for a second. Basically, any man, woman or beast that belongs in Colonial Adventures is welcome on this trip.

You guys know how this works by now, but just in case...

  • It's all about us as a community painting miniatures from the board's setting, colonialism and exploration in the 19th and 20th Centuries. We don't need to get too fussy about qualifying, though. If you have a hankering to do Clive of India or something else slightly outside the bounds, knock yourself out, if it fits the broad theme. We'll leave the wars of decolonization for another day, though. Don't want to step on the toes of the Post-Modern board.
  • You may only post one entry a day. We don't want to fill the ranks too soon, and want as many people as possible to get a chance to join.
  • Once entered, you don’t have to post every day. It’s perfectly acceptable to post just one single miniature in order to take part in the game and to become a valued member of the expedition.
  • This is not about showing your collection of already painted stuff, so please do post only newly-painted miniatures. We’re not in a hurry, so take your time.
  • As usual, the standard entry is a single based figure. However we can extend that slightly to include mounts and riders, and singly-based vignette items such as a machine gun and crew, an artillery piece, or a pair of porters struggling with a heavy load. That sort of thing. But no full unit displays, please.
  • All scales are welcome, and for the smaller ones (18mm and under) it is perfectly fine to submit a stand with several figures as the default entry, as that is roughly equivalent to a single 28mm figure in terms of effort. You may still submit single figures if you choose, however.
  • When we reach 100 entries then recruiting will end and the expedition will have marched off into the mist, probably never to be seen again.

Well that's it, enough with the boring and stuffy rules, get painting. We'll all meet up in Port Said, and if you miss us there catch us in Zanzibar.

I can't think of a better way to begin than with one of Colonial Adventures' most iconic characters...

No.1 - The Zulu

Nice idea and painting Plynkes.

Might even try my hand at this one...

Super brushwork, a great start to the expedition.

The attention to detail is fantastic. I loved the work on the rear of the shield. Needless to say, I am not going into that detail on mine. I don't think I ever could anyway.

Seconded.

I had some Ngoni arrive last week.
This may give me the excuse to paint them.

Another project?
Lovely paint job on the zulu.
I may have some suitable miniatures for this, my first painting club membership

Another project?

Not really, just a whim.
Although they will be used in future as tribesmen for Strange Aeons Up the Congo.
When I make the jungle, that is....
 ;)

I do fancy painting some, though, so this could be my nudge.

That painting job on the Zulu is absolutely top notch! Dylan, you really didn't forget how to paint a proper African figure aren't you :) Glad to see you back in the saddle, keep it coming!

It's been a year. Wasn't sure I still had it in me. And also many of my paint pots had dried up, and GW have gone and changed all their paints (or maybe just the names, but the effect is the same), so I don't know what to get to replace them.  :)

But I'm really glad you suggested we do this, Prof. I've been having lots of fun painting this last week or so. It's good to be back.
