Mid-Tech Rifle Squads and cost of removing extra soldiers
« on: June 13, 2014, 10:36:53 PM »
HEADACHE alert: Trust me, Im coding Excel (a clunky system, and I'm clunkier still!), so bear with me here  o_o

P. 88 gives a cost for removing soldiers from the BARS. The cost shown makes one GIANT assumption: that the player has only upgraded the unit with ONE of the following options:
CC Specialist
Cavalry
Enhanced
Infiltrators
Motorcycle
Pioneer

If a player chooses even TWO of these options, these provided points discounts go right out the window.

Ugh...headache yet? :)

Solution? To come up with the ACTUAL cost of reducing soldiers, I think I am going to take the Cost of the Upgrade and divide it by 10, which is the original number of troops in the Squad...and let it do its own rounding. This looks like what you did, but only assuming the one addon.

SO:
If a bog-standard squad costs 250 points, then a 9-man squad with no weapon upgrades and CC Specialist+Enhanced costs:
250 / 10 = 25
25 / 10 = 2.5
135 / 10 = 13.5

25+2.5+13.5 = 41 points per soldier, so...

250 + 25 + 135 - 41 = 369

Did I do that right? Is the formula acceptable?

ps 5 hours in and I have the Mid-Tech HQ element and PART of the BARS done   ;D

Nope! It is not meant this way, simply do not choose more than ONE option. Most specialist options already include a mixture of abilities for that reason.
The unit is specialized in one way and that’s it. That’s why I only include the downgrade cost for ONE option.
If you and your opponents agree to take more than one squad specialization you have to do some more math…  ;) (As you did) 8)

Yup, prerogative of the game designer...  ;) ;) ;)

Your solution is fine.  :)

However - I would use a simpler approach: One CC Specialist cost 3 more than a base soldier, one Enhanced soldier cost 9 more. Simply add 3+9=12 add this to the base trooper cost: 25+12= 37
Bit easier to do…
250 + 25 + 135 - 37 = 373
As a small penalty for tweaking and cherry picking ( ;)) then always round up to the next 5 or 10 digit; 373 = 375!
cheers and keep on gaming, Agis - http://www.adpublishing.de

OK. Got it. Makes sense. I think I'll leave the formula alone in my unit builder for now...but clarification from the designer is always a huge help, thanks!

One CC Specialist cost 3 more than a base soldier, one Enhanced soldier cost 9 more.

How can this be? Enhanced costs +135 for a 10man BAR Squad. 135/10 = 13.5 per soldier, rounded up is 14. I think thats why you come to 373 and I come up with 369...that's the 4 points right there :)

I totally get the cherrypicking penalty. I could build in a 1% variance, or just leave it be :)

Why 3 more?

Quote from p. 89: "Up to 5 Soldiers may be removed from the Squad for -25 (CC Specialist -28, Cavalry -30, Enhanced -34, Infiltrators -34, Motorcycle -32, Pioneer -30) points each."

CC: 28-25= 3more!
Enhanced: 34-25= 9 more!

You are approaching it too mathematically.
I have some base points and after that a lot of tweaking, testing etc.
 :D ;)

Well, dang :P

I'm trying to build a unit builder in Excel, a math-based program, so that's kinda the idea :P

I KNEW I became an English major for a reason. Stupid maths :P  I have to come up with SOMETHING, so I'll wing it for now!
