Dawn of the dead...
« on: July 26, 2008, 01:35:50 PM »
Hello folks.I am posting this here but it crosses most other forums too i think.Zombies.We all love them. But i have read with interest the discussions about skin tone,(green?) and general appearence.I always go for the grey/purple look that seems to help pick out the dark crimson blood.(especially with a green base or green clothing).
But any thoughts on 'older' zombies? Does green/grey come in to play then....to be honest it's abit of sick question but i have seen many zeds painted green and just don't seem right?Purple washes, blue washes to pale skin or maybe a light pale green wash seems more appealing on our minions. Also i believe that blood turns a lot darker too...and works well painted splashed on clothing and exposed bits.Any thoughts or examples because i love seeing other peoples ideas in 3-D. Here's some of mine

Pappa Midnight is the man for this question :) His collection is awesome. I really like the way he did his recent Zeds, as seen here.:

I am not a fan of green skinned ones either.

Among a few others in the anti-green bridgade of course!.... ;)

Check through my postings I've also done a colour pallete rundown.

Some of my recent zeds - lots of brown, green, blue and purple over pale skin tones for my own personal tastes ;)

Those look really cool Marrony! Lovely skin tones...........If lovely is the right word...? :D

Nice looking Zeds you've got there Commander. The punk looks like a Deadite from Evil Dead.
You've got a real eye for detail Geronimo, love the tattered flesh and the magazine!

The old "green" question is a funny one. No "real" corpse looks like that, but that's the colour they were in the original Dawn of the Dead.........So green's kind of a "Classic look". I was going to re-paint my collection but I still love my green rots.
Most of my new stuff involves blue, purple and green washes to get that unhealthy, bruised, rotting look. I'm thinking of using some black on my next one so he looks crispy.

When I did my zombies I was reading the Zombie Survival guide, and since I didn't like the green look either I opted for grey (I sa some grey zeds in the GW zombie regiment and they were the ones that looked best IMO). It may not be the most realistic but I wanted a uniform skin colour for all my zombies to keep things simple and coherent (and they do look quite coherent now). The grey makes them look quite old and dry, which was the major atmosphere in the Zombie Survival guide. Here's a piccie:

And the recipe is as follows. Over a black undercoat first a heavy (drybrush) coat of Aleene's Dusty Grey (a dark brownish grey), next a drybrush with a mix of Dusty Grey and Citadel Hideous Blue, and finally a drybrush with a little white added to the mix. It's not very realistic but it's simple and I still like the look of it :)

Nice.

My pallete choices:

Dead flesh:

Catachan Green/Vaj us army olive green.
highlighted up with light grey and Catchan green,
washed with purple/black.
Teeth/eyes Vaj ivory

Freshly munched:

elf flesh, overwashed with black/purple/red wash 1:2:1 mix
highlighted with elf flesh, rotting flesh mix.

Grey/rotting flesh, inked black/purple/red

Another freshly muched combo:

Purple ink over grey primer, then drybrush up with elf flesh/rotting flesh. gives a nice recently munched finish.

Hope this helps all you budding necromancer's out there!

The Commander
