Battlereport Celts vs ancient German
« on: July 29, 2014, 04:16:09 PM »
We've played this battle some time ago and for the first time we've played with the Hail Caesar rules (before that WAB and Clash of Empires). Our group of Joost, Sander, Roland and Erik was joined by Damian (son of Roland) and Latok (for him the first time ever that he played a wargame) This was also the first time that we posted a battle on a forum (at the time on a Dutch local forum).
At the request of Joost we've put two armies of barbarians opposite each other, characteristic are the aggressive attacks and the lack of discipline (and that fits well with our playing style).

The two opposing armies

Sanderix came in defence of the farm (Sander) with his tribe (carried on a shield), his units entered the table from underneath. Rolandix (Roland) entered with his Division in the Middle of the table while Damianatourix (Damian) placed his troops near the farm (behind the river that Sander had completed after many hours of work).

Leader of the Celts, the fearless Sanderix
For the Germans Joost "the brave" entered from the bottom up the table, the Germanic leader was Erik "the terrible" who entered from the Middle of the table and near the River Latok the "Violent" joined the battle.

The two opposing armies

The Germans had the first turn and Latok went first but because of an over-complicated tactic in advance, that was based on "perfect timing" he couldn't make his intentions clear to his troops and stunned as they were his full Division remained still.
Furious because Latok's division did not move, Erik yelled hiss orders to his troops but even the generals re-roll could not convince his Division and that division also remained stationary. Erik's Cavalry Division understood the order but with a very limited enthusiasm they trotted forward. Now it was up to Joost who had to carry out an essential part of the plan, he gave the orders to his troops clearly and effectively and organized his troops marched forward.

In the Celtic turn Rolandix did not do much, his Division stood where they were but he did sent his cavalry to the river
Damianatourix remained behind the river where he entertained the Celtic citizens with an exciting story.

Sanderix moved his Division forward and charged the skirmishers of Joost, the skirmishers managed to escape.
In the second Germanic turn Latoks troops stormed up the hill, Erik's Division moved forward (slowly not really enthusiastic) and Erik's cavalry stormed the Celts but did he just did not reach them.

Joost went full in the attack and the two met each other

The battle was hard and both leaders threw himself forward, Joost saw Sanderix fighting on top of his shield killing many Germans, Joost hit Sanderix with a well-targeted slash a Sanderix fell from his shield severely wounded onto the ground. Thanks to the aggressive and bloody assault of the Germans and the large amount of casualties that were inflicted, a panic broke out among the Celts, two units were destroyed and a third ran off. In the panic the poor Sanderix was trampled by his own tribesmen, he died where he laid. What remained of his Division now fell under its new leader Georgitrix.
The Celtic Cavalry attacked the Germans of Latok on the Hill, a hard fought battle broke out, the left German unit on the hill was pushed back, and despite the many casualties the Germans stood their ground
With the Germanic Cavalry nearby the Gestaetie could not control themselves (Rolandix's) the naked bleupainted Celtic zealots charged the Germanic Cavalry, Rolandix gave his other troops the order to also storm the Germans but thanks to the confusion that arose (or the fact that Rolandix at that time treated himself to a delicious stuffed cake that Latok had shared) his command was not understood by his troops and surprised they stood where they were. Three Cavalry units proved too much for the Gestaetie and they pulled back "shaken".

If Sanderix had been paying attention, then he could have send his chariots sooner but thanks to this oversight they stormed far too late towards the Germanic Cavalry, he still managed to beak a unit of Germanic but the leader of his chariots, Lieketia died in the process. In the second turn fought hard against Georgitrix (new leader of Sander) and Joost managed to also kill this new leader, the rest of Sander's his Division ran off the table in a panic.

Angry and shocked faces from Rolandix and Damianatourix after the complete eradication of Sanders Division
Latok fought hard his left unit was driven back further and exterminated but his other units stood their ground.

In the Celtic turn Damianatourix came forward over the bridge with two units and attacked Latok in the flank, Latoks warriors fought back and managed to drive the troops of Damianatourix and the cavalry of Rolandix back. Latoks archers managed to bring the Celtic Cavalry that had broken through to a halt.

Rolandix charged Erik's Division that had finally reached the other side of the field but in that fight Rolandix also died (with its unit).
In the Germanic turn Erik charged the unit of Christiaanix (new leader by Roland) and they managed to wipe this Division out as well, Christiaanix remained lifeless on the field (it was a bad battle for Celtic Generals).
Latok drove the cavalry and infantry of Rolandix and Damianatourix further back. Joost marched his Division towards the river. Also Sanders last Chariots were destroyed, Sander had no living troops left on table.

The fight between Damianatourix and Latok went unabated and Latok reformed his heavily bloodied units, Latok honoured his name, Latok "the Violent" stormed again towards the enemy.
With the divisions of Sander completely destroyed and most of Roland lost as well, the almost intact units of Joost and Erik marched towards the river where Latok was looking for trouble again.

With the arrival of the Cavalry of Joost and the aggressive attacks of Latok, the Celts evacuated the village and moved back.
Damianatourix managed to bring the citizens to safety but the stocks for the winter were in Germanic hands. Many of the surviving Celts would not reach the end of the winter.
The Germans went home fully loaded where the stories would be told about this battle for many generations.

Thanks

With regard to the youngsters, my son (the smallest of the two) believed for years that all men paint and play with little soldiers.
