Interlocking flagstones.
« on: August 18, 2014, 04:36:05 PM »
I decided to have a play with interlocking flagstones for quick flooring on projects.

Wanted to get them as thin as possible, so made it up of 1mm plasticard "stones" set on a 1mm base. The idea being that they're easy to cut. I put a line of similar stones in there too so if anything needs a frontage of stones, like a staircase, it can be achieved with one cut.

Sprayed the master to get a look at the detail.

Made a slight variant and cast them up.

With a figure for an idea of scale, each tile is 100mm x 110mm so it's a quick way to cover a fair space.

Nicely done. I have been trying to get one of the laser cutting places (card or mdf) to do something similar with uneven cavern style floors.

Andy at Heresy is working on something similar as part of his new plastic range:

I'm not sure that's physically possible , is it?

Yes I saw those, interesting stuff but he's a lot on his plate esp. as he's just seen his KS fund - in an hour.

Your stones (or mine, sold now by Fenris Games and blind beggar (Mason) ) have a different purpose: to cover large areas with a few casts. And they work pretty well! :)

Speaking (OT) of the heresy stuff: The 3 ups of the scifi guys are really nice! Will they be done in plastic? :)

Yep, but... I guess the cost would be tremendous. You see, you have to laser away whole patches , not just engrave a line or cut through the MDF, and in order to create different levels, you have to reduce the speed by which the cutter lasers a patch. slower = take away more material, faster = less material...
Do not meddle in the affairs of dragons,
for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup.

Very very cool. Will keep this in mind for my pulp Egyptian or dungeon type interiors.

One small nit, that third row from bottom could use some variation in sizes - would break up that regimented look.

Have you considered a master that is geomorphic? Would provide much more variation.

That's the plan I believe but it's going to be long term I think because he's got to finish his dragons, and then his KS first.

I get you. Yes I can imagine having to replace the laser every few sheets... Perhaps it would work more economically if you could have textured MDF, although what you save on laser cut time would more than vanish in realising that.

The idea behind that was two fold, one to offer a fronting row for staircases and the like and the other to reflect a style of stone laying like that at Greenwich Naval College where a central line is set square with the randomness either side.

No, not yet. I can always make more.  ;)

What can I say, I like looking at stone and brick work...  ::)

I did try to find a photo but no luck, if you ever visit there it's in their equiv. of cloisters.
