The infamy of Leif Sigursen (a Viking skirmish AAR)
« on: August 19, 2014, 04:25:01 PM »
Last Saturday we played the first game of (what should be) a Viking campaign. Ruleset: « Argad ! »

There were 2 players and a game master, and as it's the beginning of a campaign, there were a lots of surprises planned.

Leif Sigursen, a Norwegian chieftain, is invited to the wedding of Ingrid, daughter of Olaf a Danish chieftain, and Gudrum(?) a nephew of Horik king of Denmark. The wedding will take place in Olaf's village.

The village :

All guests are waiting for the last guest, Leif.

Leif arrives many days late.

A short time after he arrives, some foreigners are spotted in a wood near the village. They are Saxons, enemies of the Danes!

More Saxons appear on the other side of the small river.

Some men of Olaf move towards the first enemy group… then enemy slingers and bowmen also appear on a nearby hill and shoot at them from the left!

However, the Danes are successful against the smallest Saxon group.

But the large Saxon group moves to cross the river!

Olaf's men prepare to defend the village against them:

The men of Leif form a shield wall to help Olaf (or so they say):

Olaf begins to be very suspicious about Leif, but he has no choice. Till then his daughter Ingrid had been ordered to stay inside a house with her maid and two guards. As the Saxons begin to cross the river, Olaf fears she could be trapped inside the house if they reach the village: he orders Ingrid to come out of the house and to enter a sheep pen for protection.

Instead of being with his men, Leif stands near the sheep pen and seems to be talking tenderly to Ingrid…

…and comes closer to her with three of his household…

…then Leif attacks the two Danes who were guarding Ingrid, and shouts "run, Ingrid, run!"
Ingrid jumps over the fence voluntarily and runs away with Leif, her maid and the three Norwegians!

Leif blows his horn. More men of his, who were supposed to be (off-table) guarding their ship on the coast, appear not far from the village…

…and take position just outside the village to protect his retreat.

Passing near a group of farmers, one of the Norwegian warriors asks a woman to come with them, as "Norwegian warriors are so much stronger than Danes".

…that new idea of the "Norwegian" player was completely unexpected, but we have a special rule for NPC reaction:

a smiley die is rolled… and!!!

…the peasant woman leaves her village and goes with the Norwegian too! Another shame for the Danes!

The Saxon chief asks to talk with Olaf. He tells that the Saxons have been paid by Leif, and that they don't really want to attack the village, they accept to go away if Olaf pays a small fee. Olaf asks them if he could pay them to attack Leif and bring his daughter back! The Saxons say it will be very expensive – but Olaf is rich, and he wants his daughter to marry the king's nephew, so he accepts to pay a lot of money if his daughter can be brought back. However, it's probably too late.

Olaf's men run after the filthy swine who rapted Ingrid (OOOoops, um, yes I was playing Olaf).

Leif, Ingrid, and the Norwegian troop, run to their table edge. Some Saxons shoot at them with little effect.

The lovers reach their table edge.

Leif's ship (always off table) :

(In fact, as the game was planned Olaf had not much chance to prevent the rapt. In the scenario Leif and Ingrid secretly loved each other since some time. The rapt was necessary for the campaign to continue).

After the game:

"Olaf player" proclaims that the wedding is delayed till the bride is brought back as she has been taken.

"Leif player" answers that she cannot be brought back as she has be taken because, um, she has been taken;
and that Ingrid sends a message to her father telling that she is happy and that he will soon become grandfather;
and that Ingrid calls all Danish women to gain equal rights and freedom!

"Olaf player" answers that Danish women have much more rights and freedom and happiness in their village than lying down in the bottom of a Norwegian ship!

Next game next saturday.

Indeed :)

I loved Patrice's face when he finaly realised I was kidnapping his (Olaf's) daughter  lol

Of course the tittle of this report is a misfit, it should be called "the saga of Leif Sigursen", as this is just the beginning of the story*  ;)

* which is actually the first romance we ever played in wargaming  ::)

I was in doubt from the beginning; but when the Saxons began to cross the river I had no choice I had to defend the village and to ignore the risk of treason – I couldn't fight both enemies.

Our destinies are in the hand of the Game master... lol

Yes, "love" was the twist... or at least hormones...  ;)
