'Of Gods and Mortals' - Odin the Allfather
« on: September 04, 2014, 09:18:43 PM »
A first glimpse of this 40mm Odin with his ravens Hugin & Munin and his wolves Geri & Freki.

The big slate base has been added by me, but the rest all comes in the set. It's resin - I don't see how those ravens could have been done with metal - and paints up nicely, although it will need washing in soapy water first (that cloak is a big slippery surface to cover otherwise).

I kept the colour scheme simple - rough and rustic for the cloth, all red gold for the metal. I hope you like him!

Great paint on an outstanding figure.  I'm not completely sold on the sculpting for Hugin and Munin, but The Old Man and Geri and Freki more than make up for it.

I've been painting my Victorian figures for BLAM. Now I see this. Now my figures look like they've been crayoned in by a gorilla with poor hand -eye coordination
 Thanks Cubs!

That is simply jaw dropping brushwork. Are the large areas of cloth, etc wet blended as the transitions are great. You should paint my BLAM figures.  :D

Wow, thanks guys. It was a big old project and took me a long time, but it's a really good model and I thought he deserved the time spent on him.

Great paint on an outstanding figure.  I'm not completely sold on the sculpting for Hugin and Munin, but The Old Man and Geri and Freki more than make up for it.

If I could change one thing, I'd have wanted one raven sat on the shoulder, leaning forward and cawing. But as you say, it's a great model and perhaps that's me being greedy!

Were can I getz one of those sculpts?
He's part of Northstar's 'Of Gods and Mortals' range and if he's not available yet, he soon should be.

Are the large areas of cloth, etc wet blended as the transitions are great.

The cloak was the bit I dreaded doing the most - I just hate large flat areas without detail. In the end it turned out simpler than I'd feared. The first few dark shades were just normal layering and then I switched to doing some very light drybrushing with a very soft fuzzy old brush. This picked up the raised areas nicely and gave it a real cloth-like texture. I then went over and highlighted using the same colour in a thin wash and repeated this process going up through the lighter shades.

Now I've typed it, it looks complicated, but it was just about using the colour off the palette in two different ways, one after the other, to get the result I wanted. Some light mud was then obviously added in the same way around the bottom.

Thanks for the reply. I feel my figures are too basic but I have too many long breaks between painting to really improve. The breaks are not normally by choice!  I'd love a proper painting lesson with someone like you or Captain Blood or Dwartist (and other amazing LAF painters),  just watching how it's done. I like to paint my own stuff rather than farm it out but I can see why people go to a good painting service, especially as you do commercial stuff.
