Dear Boy,

Very, Very , Nice.
I will inform my good friend Fabio Finocchio in Napoli .
He will love this as he is very patriotic and I am sure
he would start a collection.

I would add but not a criticism, it would help to see painted units , than
the odd figure. This would help , so we could construct formations .
I am sure this would encourage many fellows to buy in volume .
The great Sean Pudd has down some outstanding sculpting .
Fantastico !

Keep it up
Cecil

I studied the Unification of Italy for 6th Form History many years ago, and have had an interest in the subject ever since. I've always fancied a Neopolitan army. It's a pity you won't be at SELWG. I'll have to see if I can manage a day at Warfare this year. :P

Chaps

a general request please..although I have a fair amount of "uniform" information I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right
direction bookwise...im sure Carlos has this at his fingertips!
the New book on the subject is en route to me ..I believe this
is pretty good on the uniforms and narrates the "Exotic Apprenticeship
" with some verve!

cheers

we are talking 1835 onwards in South America
Nuno would be in the know as well im sure ;)

What do you want specific information on? If you want information on Garibaldi and the Guerra dos Farrapos then probably your best bet for uniform plates, as with all things Brazilian is  Barroso's famous tome Uniformes do Exercito Brasileiro

The University of Toronto has a full version on-line and most of the plates can be find on the on-line galleries at the NYPL. Just as well as a mint copy will put you back around five to six hundred quid these days.

I think I might still have a Brazilian magazine article on the war floating around somewhere, unless the wife has junked it. I'll have a hunt later.

Really what you want for the period is loads of gaucho cavalry. Paint the odd figure up in the Grêmio team strip and you can  get double use as members of the BNP, UKIP or any other group of racist arse wipes you care to nominate. ;)

For the Uruguayan civil war stuff my best suggestion is the Foundry book on the War of the Triple Alliance by Terry Hooker. That has a reasonable survey of Argentine army types running back to the 1820s. All black and white line drawings of course but by far the best researched Foundry book.

NO no no! Now another range to buy! This is a MUST!! I have been waiting for years to see someone producing a good range for the 1000s. Mirliton has some, and they are among that company's best, but it is a different standard from what we are used to today...

There is a fantastic book which came out a couple of years ago, L'avventura dei mille. La spedizione di Garibaldi nei disegni di Giuseppe Nodari, which you can buy from Amazon at a great price
http://www.amazon.it/Lavventura-spedizione-Garibaldi-attraverso-ritrovati/dp/8817045675

It's a collection of original drawings and watercolors from one of the Garibaldini who were with me in the first part of the expedition. How could he find time to paint I do not know but it's a great book - Lots of inspirations!

Malto

greetings glad I have another fan of the period deep down
I knew it might garner some interest...lets hope loads
as I will do this in depth.............The book you mentioned
is a real beauty I was sent a copy by my mate Ralph Weaver
at the Continental Wars Society and its fantastic with all those
skirmishes..the neapoltan infantry with their turned back greatcoats
and barrack caps and the suicidal Garabaldini.............fighting amongst
gothic splendour in Palermo!! stirring stuff.

You know Ged, the really dangerous thing about these is some of them would probably double for the War of the Pacific. Now there's a war which, with great sculpts like yours, might be hard to resist.

Carlos

colour plated book on the subject. I sure there will be some dove tailing and
if the demand is high..who knows.  ;)

BUT I must stay in 1860 and decide today which of the 4 Dragoon helmets
I will use for the Neapolitaan dragoons! ..swords ..equipment etc. this army
had a very distinctive look im trying to capture with my sculpter :D

According a history professor of mine, the Unification of Italy was payed by england. In Piedmont there were many mills and in the southern of Italy there were many sheeps, but Italian sheeps produced woool not suitable for clothes and so the wool was sold by the British to the Piedmont.

Can you confirm this fact?

Gringo,

I would buy your whole collection if only I had the time to paint, but for Garibaldi you can have write me down as your first customer! Should I book the entire collection now? Is there a benefit for enthusiastic supporters?

I do hope you are considering the Hungarian legion when you are doing the garibaldini, http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legione_ungherese

as well as a host of some of the special characters: Jesse White Mario, Alexandre Dumas, Istvan Turr!

I am afraid it is a gross over simplification of a much more complicated story, as told by a bad professor (there are many who think a simplistic crypto-marxist view based on the economy explains everything)
