Star Trek uniforms...
« on: August 20, 2008, 11:52:09 AM »
I was wondering:

Does anyone remember what the colous on the uniforms stand for in ST and ST:TNG?

I think I remember the following:

ST:

Mustard (or Pistacie): Command
Red: Engineering
Blue: Medical/Science

ST:TNG:

Red: Command
Mustard: Engineering/Security
Blue: Medical Science

Anything else? Was Security Red in ST?

And no, I'm not painting ST crews (hmmm....), but I have another use for the colour coding  :)
Ask at the LAF, and answer shall thy be given!

Security were red in the original series, yes.

Also, In TNG, while blue was worn by medical staff, science crew wore green (Well, Dax in DS9 did, and so did Troi sometimes, so I'm assuming they were down as general "science" types)

only green was Kirk's ballet top and his dress uniform... Dax was blue as was Troi...

command (i.e. Captain) was actually a green colour apparently that under the lights, the velour type material came out Gold - Kirks shirt is a different shade to the helmsman's shirts... but they've always been accepted as being the same colour.

Gold - Command/Navigation
Blue - Science/Medical
Red - Engineering/Security

Really? I could have sworn Troi wore a green uniform on occasion. Especially earlier episodes, as I remember they updated the uniforms later on. I am easy confused mind. Especially when i was really concentrating more on what was in the uniform...

Kirk's green pullover was lovely, I think they should have kept that for the later series.

Troi didn't wear a uniform at all in the earlier seasons. She wore civvies, in her case a grey/pink catsuit, or sometimes a green or a blue dress.

In later seasons they decided that the Ship's Counsellor should wear a uniform like everybody else, and she donned the blue version. I guess she grew out of that whole rebellious phase, or was tired of being summoned to the headmaster's office for uniform violations.

Sure she didn't in the first series? I distinctly remember her in one of the miniskirted versions (you don't forget a formative image like that in a hurry) and they phased them out later on.

You know what? I don't think I want to argue about Star Trek on the internet. I have enough sad things to spend time on on my painting table.  lol

Yes! Now you mention it I seem to recall her in a mini-dress, too.

Only really seen in the pilot episode, Encounter At Farpoint. Couldn't find any pictures of her wearing it though  :?

Speaking of uniforms, does anyone make miniatures that would well represent the original series outfits?
I would like to run an original series rpg.

I seem to remember that she decided to take on more command responsiblities seeing as she was technically the 5th highest ranking officer or something... they did an episode where she had command of a bridge shift (always annoyed me about Trek, the way it was always the same bridge crew no matter what - even if they were off the bridge for whatever reason, the B team would just get shoved off somewhere to appear when needed)

The episode where she tested to be able to take a command watch of the bridge was a really good episode. Her test in the holodeck consisted of having the crew solve a rapidly deteriorating engineering issue.

But the test wasn't of her problem solving skill at all, but of whether she could order a crew member under her command to follow through with repairs that would most likely lead to his or her death.

A nice job in the writing of that episode, I thought, especially that it sticks with me so many years later.
