Need advice on British VSF sailors
« on: August 23, 2008, 01:54:18 AM »
Hey there! I've been working away at a British Walker for my VSF forces and finally remembered that I need a crew. I think I have a captain figured out, but  I need a couple of victorian sailor figs to fleshg the crew out. Any suggestions of what to use? I need at least 3 poses - one for the wheel, and two gunners. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Reviresco makes some French sailors that can be easily converted to British (cut the pompom off the hat).  They also have a generic sailor pack.

Copplestone Darkest Africa British sailors. The Nordenfeldt gun crew would be ideal.

OG Boxer Rebellion range has a pack of generic European sailors in naval rig. They are all designed as gun crew, so you will have some choices there.

Redoubt Enterprises do some sailors in their ACW range. They also designed some sailors who were sold by PMC games with this resin submarine.I am not sure if you can still get them as PMC are no longer around, but they were made by Redoubt so they may still have the moulds.

Old Glory has a pack of miniatures Naval Artillery crews
http://www.oldgloryminiatures.com/proddetail.asp?prod=CBP%2D09&cat=228
which has a lot of open handed sailors. Usually are German and British , sometimes french, too. I use them for my boats.
They also have landing parties of other nations like Spanish, US, French etc.

the other obvious choices are:
Copplestone Darkest Africa (naval landing party, artillery crew, naval officers) and  russian sailors HMG, which maybe are useful.
Perry miniatures Sudan range (Naval brigade and artillery, they even have an admiral on horseback),
Redoubt Enterprises Sudan, ACW and Victoriana ranges
and the London Warroom generic british style sailors with shells and fire fighting paraphernalia, as well as open handed.
Maybe also you can use the new Blue Moon manufacturing release with sailors.
As for american crews: Pulp miniatures. They are of a later age, but some might be used.
Brigade games has German and Russian sailors: with guns and HMG.
Ironclad miniatures has a new range of VSF which includes a set of sailors in armour.
There is also a scarcity of deck hands and officers.
Did I forget any other range?

While writing the message Malamute has posted some info on the above  ad also added a couple of photos.

Leaning towards these guys from Blue Moon. A bit cartoony, but tons of character.

I've used the Perry Miniatures Sudan naval brigade figures for my walker. The packes for the Gatling/ Gardner guns are great with standing/ seated/ carrying ammunition poses. Their screw gun and crew is good to paint up as royal artillery. I suppose you have to ask whether the walker is Army or Navy? Or maybe a combination?

Checking the blue moon website I have seen that they plan to release another set of sailors. This time of armed sailors. They might be useful as well!
