Cheezit! It's the cops!

The uniform is based on a 1930's Maryland State Police uniform. I needed a break from painting swashbucklers and pirates. Since I am not German, it took me a week of evenings to get these guys painted.

Cool. They look sort of like Mounties  (to an uneducated European eye, at any rate).

You need bootleggers with speedboats or something. Would Maryland Bootleggers have used speedboats? I dunno. Speedboats are still what you need. I like speedboats.

Hey, my catchphrase seems to be taking off. That's cool too.

The one who looks like he's in charge seems to be trying to get a signal on his mobile phone (or taking a photo with it).

What is that really in his hand?

The "cell phone" is actually a warrant book. Officious prigs used to have these little leather wallets for holding search warrants. The idea was that it would go something like this:

Police: We have a warrant to search these premises for pornography, guns, and distillation apparatuses. *hands over warrant book*

Gangster: Curses! However, your professionally-folded search warrant in this charming black leather wallet means that you are a devoted servant of the law. Well, I give up and promise to reform.

Nowadays Lenny Briscoe shoves the pink copy of a triplicate form in your face. I tell you, it's the coarsening of society.

Maryland's bootleggers mostly did overland. Central Maryland west of Baltimore used to be the best place in the world for distilling rye whiskey. Prohibition came and they just kept going west, out into the hills, and stopped making decent rye, with the end result being that distilling rye is a lost art. I understand the popular way to get booze into town was smuggled in boxcar loads.

There were some bay bootleggers, but they used traditional Chesapeake Bay workboats: the 22-foot motor trawler and the sailing skipjack. Neither of these are particularly speedy. They are ubiquitous, though, but not as flashy as a good speedboat.

They do look like Mounties, even to my trained American eye. I believe both uniforms are based on the old cavalry uniform, so it's more common heritage than one side stealing from the other. Not that you'll ever hear a Canadian confess to such.

Today's state troopers wear a khaki uniform, but keep the Smoky The Bear hat. In Maryland, they've also taken to using unmarked Dodge Chargers as highway cruisers, which is totally cheating and unfair. When they were the only people driving Crown Vics, it was so easy to tell when they were out on patrol. I've almost been pulled over twice since the switch, saved only by idiot mall kids in their plastic-fantastic Honda Civics.

Great work! The colour combo ain´t that swell, but those to blame for it will be dead for decades by now... :D sorry, just don´t like that combination of brown and blue. "Es beißt sich", ("the colours bite each other") like we say in Germany.

Maaan, I just WANT to go out and buy that Revell Fishing Boat in 1:56th scale RIGHT NOW! *breathes* Nooo, finish that P-26 first... must... finish... planie..."

Good info on bay boats:

http://www.baygateways.net/workboats.cfm

The deadrise would be easy to do. Certain people, known for their mad scratchbuilding skills, could probably knock one out in an hour or two from cardstock. Like, say, while glue was drying on a P-26...

"I'd like to send this letter to the Prussian consulate in Siam by aeromail. Am I too late for the 4:30 autogyro?"
"Uh, I better look in the manual... This book must be out of date. I don't see "Prussia", "Siam" or "autogyro"...

Klatu: Yes, it is a double-barreled shotgun.

Witchfinder General: It's a warrant book--a useless little leather wallet which holds search and arrest warrants. The only reason you didn't know that is because my first reply was long, pointless, and rambling.

Prof. Witchheimer: :o Unbelievable!

Grimm: The hats remind you of "Oh Brother." And what a great movie! I should get some Copplestone hillbillies to go for these guys to bust for moonshine.
