did a tarzan game once where spells were noted by skull placed on the bases and removed when the spell wore off ,for spells that affected l.o.s or movement we used huge clumps of coloured cotten wool that was thinned down as the spell became weaker and gw spiders for spells that caused fear? worked ok for us.

How about some native totems?

I recently made these for Darkest Africa/Pulp/etc games:

Made from 1 pence coins, cocktail stick/skewer, thread and some GW and Foundry skulls.

Lovely looking pieces - that thread wrapped around the post looks very effective for only a limited amount of work.

What's the big stake for ?

I need some kind of marker to denote which units have already had spells cast on them

How about a small scenic marker such as a clump of mushrooms ?
Don't know if you get many in darkest Africa, but "magic" and "mushrooms" just seem to go together.

That would be this one:

Balsa pole with a Foundry native statue added to the top.

That all looks very promising.

I like the idea of European malaria victims possibly succumbing to magic - that would give a lot of fun I feel :)

Maybe the well-disciplined African troops should have their resistance increased, but still have a small chance of cracking. I dislike too much certainty in my games.

I'll be very interested to see how it all turns out but I think it should work well.

Just back from our local Pondstore where I bought 2 "Necklace and bangle" sets from the Hallowe'en display.

The necklace had:
1 x skull 4.5cm tall
8 x skulls 2cm tall
8 x "crossed bones" - fairly poor but might be useful as markers

The bangle has:
10 x skulls 1.5cm tall

All are useful in pirate/pulp/DA etc games as well as in scenery construction.

I don't know if you people already know this but Reaper paints come with an 'Easter Egg', so to speak. Its a little cast skull stirrer in each jar which rattles nicely when you shake it. I usually fish them out since they are perfect for 28mm purposes.

For various reasons I didn't have time to make any fetishes in an Overlord style. So as a stopgap I quickly knocked up some simple skull counters instead.

I am going to make some poles eventually, as they are dead smashing. But for tomorrow's game these will have to do.

Good stuff! You're "knocked up" efforts beat my "hours of painstaking work" efforts  :(

I'm looking forward to a game report full of the usual witty repartee  :)

Just a case of base coat, wash and highlight. No construction required , that was the main thing (they are decorations from the shields of GW plastic skellies), as I had a deadline and too much other stuff to paint and varnish, such as some of the figures we'll actually be playing with.

At Newark last weekend someone showed me some skull markers that are being made by Litko but imported/stocked by GZG
