X-Com(-ish) Project - another APC
« on: December 05, 2014, 10:34:37 PM »
Hey guys,

I'm new to the forum and would like to post a couple of pictures of my current project.
I'm planning to do an X-Com style alien invasion campaign next year, most likely using slightly altered Pulp Alley rules.

What better way to start than to build a Skyranger, I thought, as most combat missions in the computer games start there.

It's about 90% done (minus paint) I guess, I'n not too sure I like the guns the way they are. I definetly want it to be armed in some fashion, but the not-rotatable guns on the wings remind me more of an interceptor aircraft than a transportation one.
If any one of you have any ideas I'd be grateful to hear them  ;)

The minis in the picture are Copplestone Future Wars Troopers, which I'm using for the starting X-Com troops.
I have 8 of them painted so far, I hope to find the time to take pictures next week.

Looking good. Always nice to see an ambitious project on the boards.

If I was to come with a suggestion, it'd be to sand the edges down, then give it a coat primer and then sand again that way you can see if any bits need filling. I'm not sure if you know that or not, but having learnt from past experience it's well worth the effort.

X-com really does see to be one of those games that just won't go away. Good to see new life being born into it.

Looks like a good start! Maybe the tail could be a little more beefy, and a littel detailing on the front? About the weapons, I think it would make more sense to mount them close to the body (fuselage?) so the bullets or laser rays hit what's directly in front of the aircraft.

Thanks for the friendly replies and advice :)

Dijit:
Thank you for the advice, I'll try it before painting.

Cherno:
I've thought about making the tail thicker, but I think I'm going to leave it as it is. Still, thanks for the input.

I've taken the guns off the Skyranger and for some reason added an exit hatch (seriously, it was late and I'm not sure why I did this - looks ok though).

I also took pictures of the two strike teams I painted last month. I hope you like them.

I love the brown shade on armor. What color is it?

You are actually doing what I've been wanting to do for the longest of times!

I like the work you've put into it so far; ambitious, but that's X-COM for ya... ;)

The Skyranger especially is ace. I am planning on using the ubiquous Chickenhawk paper dropship as a starting point, but enlarged to approx. 140%, and in plasticard, with an accessable interior. After all, I can't recall how many times a mission went tits up the moment the ramp dropped, as some Sectoid with a plasmabomb Launcher took a shot right into the compartment... ::)

I've got my troopers from Heresy well before the newest incarnation of the game, to be used as 'stage 1' squadies with some work, but when the latest game came out, it turned out that the Heresy Troopers are just spot on now!

For stage 2, I was thinking about using Eldar Guardian bodies, and stage 3, I've not even thought about yet, as powerarmour with the right look is not easy to find.

I'm loving your paintjobs btw. Also, the terrain is ace!

And is it just me, or has some hooligan even defiled that Dallas poster with a black marker? lol
Miniatures you say? Well I too, like to live dangerously...

Again, thanks for your kind words.

Dargoth:
The brown armour was done with a basecoat of Vallejo Tan Earth from their Panzer Series, washed with GW Devlan Mud. I usually don't use GW colours but this one works very well and fast.

Daeothar:
You spotted right :D

For power/titan armour I've slightly converted some Eisenkern models, I think they get the message across. Now that you mention it, the Heresy troopers look very nice as well.
I might use them if I want to do troopers from a second base/outfit. But for now I think I should focus on what I have already (always easier to say than to do...).

Do you have a picture of the Chickenhawk you mentioned? I'm curious how it looks.

I've also added a couple of pictures of troopers in Titan Armour and of others vandelised posters.

I'm not the one asked, but anyway...
