Airfield and Gaming Mat
« on: December 29, 2014, 09:10:09 PM »
It's been trial and error making 'canvas & caulking' gaming mats.
I'm thinking we are almost there, but this one might need another round of drybrushing...
The runway is just a bit of Ikea 'no-skid' mat. Not much effort here since runways don't feature too often in our games. If this starts to see more table time, I'll dress it up with some lines.

The Perilous Island campaign requires an airport/airfield. These Dust Tactics Quonset Huts fit the bill. :-* Add a few other buildings, some set-dressing and these will make a very convincing airfield or military base.

The kit comprises six buildings. Easy to assemble and to customise. I couldn't resist sticking two end-to-end for a bit of variety.

The 'ticket counter' was scratch-built from plasticard.

A few period airline logos help dress up the huts. Windows are glazed with clear 'blister' plastic sprayed matte and airbrushed with earth tones.

Each building was painted a different colour and quickly weathered with oils, mostly to suggest dirt and grime with very little rust.

Period travel posters dress up the ticket booth. The ginger chap is hanging about just for scale.

Photos were taken with an Olympus E420, perhaps the best surprise under the tree this year. It's an older camera, but a big improvement over my current Fuji Finepix. Yet another learning curve to climb...

Television is rather a frightening business. But I get all the relaxation I want from my collection of model soldiers. P. Cushing

Very nice! Love that kiosk!  lol

How did you fit the windows? I'd meant to do the same with my huts but the bulk on the back made for an ugly recess. I was going to cut loads of little squares the size of each pane, in order to mount them a little more flush, but have been too lazy to get around to it.

I joined my gun with pirate swords, and sailed the seas of cyberspace.

Thank you gents, glad this lot passes muster. I'm especially happy with the gaming mat, as this has opened up some nice options for new terrain projects.

How did you fit the windows?
I cut slightly over-sized squares and rectangles and glued them into place... The ugly recess is there, but if you measure nicely, with a divider, you can get a size and shape that mitigates the 'gap'. Totally passes the three foot test.

I made plasticard templates for each window size and that eased mass production. Spraying up a big sheet of clear plastic to look nice & dusty also made the job a breeze since I didn't need to be too precious about potential mistakes...

Humbrol Clear-Fix was my glue of choice, mainly because I've been hanging on to a jar for a long time.

$129 as of today for the 50mm... But yes, I would love to get a lens for the Canon and this Olympus is teaching me why.

Hmm.  Could have sworn I saw it cheaper.  Check used lenses at the usual Van cam stores.

His are so clean! I weathered the hell out of mine.

Actually I had to scale back my weathering a little, because they were so far gone it would have been hard to believe they were still in use!
