Has anyone played a game using the mass combat system from Alamo? How do they play?

I haven't tried them.  :(

If you are looking for rules for the Alamo period  I use Brother against Brother. :)

Grimm,

I haven't purchased them, so I cannot comment on how they play. I don't own a copy of LOTOW either, so have no idea what they are like.Sorry I can't provide any more info. :(

I mentioned Brother against Brother as this is what we play our Alamo games with in case anyone was looking for alternatives.

Such posts are a tad unproductive, sir... ;)

Now, I´m a huge fan of the original LOTOW rules and have studied the Alamo rulebook closely when a buddy of mine kindly lent me his copy for a couple of weeks. My opinion: Good ideas, and an interesting approach for mating the LOTOW mechanics with larger troop numbers.

I´m curious though how the use of "heroes" would work out when interacting with "bodies of troops".

Nonetheless, the Alamo IMHO is the supplement most worth buying, if only for the artillery rules.

I´m currently writing up a rule set for Russian Civil War, Spanish Civil War, Chinese Civil War and the Gran Chaco based on the Alamo rules... I hope to take a pre-run to Tactica.

Don't like them.
I'm a current player of LOTR where the system is closed to the LOTOW rules (it's the same in fact). In LOTR there is no need of a such system of resulting combat by mass.

LOTR and LOTOW are fast to play, so why to want a fighting system by unit. In any case, it's not faster than the LOTR system....
I don't understand very well the idea of the writer !

That's true, except for when you do mass
battle games, such as Helms Deep, or Pelenor
Fields, the game then slows down tremendously,
where as if you did an Alamo battle with non-mass
combat rules it would. I converted the mass combat
rules to LOTR and came out with some great results.

Sounds good. Could I have a look at that? I have not started purchasing LotOW rulebooks, yet, but I do play LotR and would like to see something that speeds up game play for larger battles.
Ask at the LAF, and answer shall thy be given!

I'd be interested to know how they work out.
We have the scenery for the Alamo in 25mm (the old Hudson and Allen set) which is about a metre square, possibly bigger, so anything less than 50 defenders and there are hopeless gaps on the walls, which means the attackers need 2-300 figures. Personally I don't fancy trying that with LoTW, but we are looking at an adaptation of the "45 minutes at Peking" rules (very similar circumstances so it might not be too bad).
Gary, Glynis, and Alasdair (there are three of us, but we are too mean to have more than one login)
