A certified sculpting genius does it again.
« on: September 11, 2008, 08:49:12 AM »

Tom Meier for Dark Sword:

...based on Boticchellis's Venus:

I have a few of his miniatures (Yes, yes, female semi-nudes, most of them, thank you very much...) and they are almost too good to use with anything else. I have read his blog where he talks about sculpting technique but I still don't understand how he does it.

I've painted one of them which was challenging but very rewarding. It's the rightmost miniature in this group of Chthulu miscreants:

A miniature work of art  :-*

I'm sure your brushwork will do her justice  :)

It is a very nice sculpt, but I'd prefer a straight Botticelli Venus to one with all that silly demonic shit plastered over it.

I'm with you there, I'm not keen at all on GW/D&D aesthetics, but I appreciate the fact that TM has arranged the baby dragons to emulate the flowing hair of the original. Having the sculpts hair singed off is a nice touch to.

Have to second/third Plynkes' call for a more realistic approach. It's such a fine sculpt, but the head with the dragon spoils it for me. This girl is a beauty, why contaminate it with childish fantasy applications? The subtle emulating of Venus' hair shows Tom could've done better.

Sorry for the little rant, maybe it's because I'm a fan of Botticelli's work, and especially of his Simonetta portraits. ;)

Nevertheless, looking forward to see it painted. The linked photo is quite promising. I didn't get, which size those minis are?

Dark Sword. They do D&D'esque miniatures.

It is a sculpt of a specific character from the George R R Martin books who raises 3 dragons...

Doesn't make it better, I'm afraid.  :P
Although a talented modeller could save the mini with a head swap.

Which will sell more - Dragon-girl or Venus?

I can't see that there would be much of a market for figures inspired purely by fine art, as fascinating a prospect as that might be.

Presumably he likes to make a little cash and dragons are usually popular [though apparently not here  ;)]

Black Tree Dark Elves Assassins, Hasslefree Whitemetal Cultists and, yes, The Summoner from Dark Sword. All 28mm (slender).

I need some of those Dark Sword girls for my BA games as well. Only thing is, I've been hearing the Dark Sword sculpts vary dramatically in size so I don't know which ones would be OK to get :-[

Stick to Tom Meier's stuff and you'll be alright.

@Argonor, I've got the dancing giril to. She's got an extremely dynamic pose.
