Crashed UFO - somewhere in Germany, 1944 - build thread
« on: January 03, 2015, 02:45:23 AM »
I should have painted figures...or vehicles...or even my terrain boards for my SOTR project, but after seeing Vanvlak's excellent thread here, I decided to scavenge some parts and do a little UFO crash diorama. It will be an objective to spice up my games  lol

Parts used:

An attachment from a broken hair dryer:

It looks great even upside down:

Plus assorted bits I had lying around - a roller from a storage box, another part from the hair dryer, part of a toy truck sent from Spain by Junkers (a fellow member here, not the airplane!  ;D) and a collar from bottler of deodorant:

Everything was sanded, then superglued with a little help from Green Stuff (Mason and Vanvlak, once again thanks for the tips) until I got this:

Then I sprayed it Silver, with the cheapest Chinese spray paint I had in my inventory. It isn't really clear in the picture, but the spray gave the "UFO" a texture a bit like cast metal.

Every good UFO needs some strange symbols, so I attacked my Tau decals until I came up with this:

The final result:

Now I'll work on the terrain itself, were I'll try to emulate this diorama (that you can see on the museum at Roswell):

Love it! Benny did a crashed UFO out of an ID4 model he was given:

Nicely done - I'm saving a pile of Tau transfers for similar reasons  :D
The silvered effect looks a bit like a Hammerite finish, and look good on the UFO - but not quite Hammerite, due to the scale and smoothness, and a lot like some exotic alien metal.
We need a Scavengers badge  ;)

I'd say this rather matches the Glocke (at least as "donor-tech"). The Haunebu's more akin in design to the Adamsky UFO, IMHO.

Back to topic, I really like that mottled look the metal has right now. Looks very alien - is it an actual texture (as in, can you feel it upon touch) or more of a visual effect?

Great work! I've been trying to find one of those alien attacker models for some time now! I want one of them to do the crashed Roswell one ;)

Don't worry, I have another thing prepared to be the Glocke (it's going to be the reactor of this one).

Love it !

Zizi666, I already have a Haunebu ;)

I had both Tau and Eldar decals but I was disappointed by the Eldar ones - they look too Human, with basically hieroglyphs. And yes, we need a badge ;)

It's just a visual effect, can't really explain it. It's like lots of droplets of silver paint covered by a transparent film. Vanvlak is right, it really looks like Hammerite but without the texture.

Here's the latest update.

The UFO was glued with hot glue to a MDF board cut to shape. The idea is just to represent the path of the crash (and that way it can be placed in any table) and the mound created by the impact (mound was made with bits of cork):

The sides were also built up with cork

And I also decided to start "weathering" the UFO by burning it with matches  lol

Then I started to cover the bark with my own recipe of terrain gloop - fine sand; water; wood glue; plaster and cement pigments:

Added some black paint to darken the gloop and then painted the burnt ground:

Reinforced the front of the UFO with more gloop:

and used the last of gloop to make some bases (for the dead aliens, that will serve as objectives)

and then started cutting it with a soldering iron and weathering it again with burning matches and some black wash:

Then I had a little mishap. The gloop was cracking (maybe I shouldn't have used a heat gun the speed up the process? lol) and I gave it a wash of watered glue...that didn't dry transparent! It dried whitish...

So I'm waiting for it to dry totally (without using the heat gun) to see the final result. If it ruined the colors, I'll just mix the gloop and go over the terrain again.

More news in 5 days!  ;D

Lookin' good - I hope that gloop isn't poop though...

Yep, fingers crossed. I really hope it doesn't crack again.

I though the UFO was in a very poor position for a crashed spaceship... then I saw you attacked it. Nice work!

The cut open side is a nice feature. 8) 8)

Will you be fading the crashsite trail at all? cutting it to a taper, or tapering the 'ditch' to normal terrain? It could improve its placement on the table.

I wish you luck with the glue drying, and cannot wait for the next instalment.

Many thanks
Matt
