Musketeers Series 2 and nostalgia
« on: January 03, 2015, 10:31:48 PM »
Just wondering if anyone has watched the start of the new series of Musketeers on BBC1. It's probably not intentional and given the general period and the nature of the adventures and certainly a factor of my age but I keep seeing hints The Flashing Blade - the ambush in a defile and the slashed, dark padded spanish uniforms; the trailer for next week seemed to show D'artagnan being chased around in trees and crashing through ferns. All elements of the swashbuckling 60's series.

Not actually a gaming post but given the generally flouncy shirts I trust it qualifies? And Flashing Blade is what makes me want to buy any figure in a morion or waving a sword. As a kid I bought Minifig Spanish Renaissance figs, all swords and arquebus, not a single pike. That's the power of TV and bad dubbing for you....

It's a GREAT series. The second season starts Jan 17th here in the States.  Can't wait!

Well, Faust, based on this episode you won't be disappointed. Its going out here post 9pm watershed so they've upped the body count a touch. Great fun and there's a hint that they actually have to reload which is a bit radical but adds dramatic tension....

It struck me during episode 1 that the Spaniards couldn't hit a barn door with their muskets, but the musketeers never missed with their pistols.

Thought it was great fun...and Marc Warren will bring some suitably mad comic evil to the proceedings

Absolutely agree. I have fond memories of watching The Flashing Blade during the summer holidays back in the 70's :)

It's great to see some swashbuckling on TV in this era of docusoaps, reality TV, and endless crime dramas. :)

If you're after nostalgia, you can get "The Flashing Blade" on DVD.
So you get all the episodes, and the music.

"You've got to fight for what you want,
for all that you believe.
It's right to fight for what you want,
to live the way we please.
As long as we have done our best,
and no man can do more.
Then life and love and happiness,
are well worth fighting for."

Better yet, it even has an episode that wan't originally broadcast in the UK....

And if you want haunting music (at the risk of thread-hijacking) you can get Robinson Crusoe on DVD too.
Gary, Glynis, and Alasdair (there are three of us, but we are too mean to have more than one login)

Watched episode 1 of the second series and was amazed that the Spaniards couldn't hit the Musketeers (who were standing on the edge of a cliff) with their muskets, but almost every shot from a Musketeer's pistol killed a Spaniard.   lol

Flashing Blade - yet another DVD I've bought but never found the time to sit down and watch. :(

Similarly, I've recorded all of series 1 of the Musketeers and not watched any of that. Must remember to start recording series 2 for that ever distant date that I can catch up with what I've recorded. :D

Do what we did when Alasdair was younger :
Only watch one episode per night. Preferably not on consecutive nights.

For extra nostalgia, look for the "Singing Ringing Tree" series too (voted the scariest TV programme ever broadcast?).
