Thanks comment stalwarts!

Tried to print a massive new vehicle and had my first print failure (well, the bed ran out of resin stupidly overnight) but I'm going to leave that vehicle for now (or maybe order an FDM print of it) and go back to modelling scatter terrain - I'm trying to make 10-15 interesting 'objects' then combine them in different ways on bases. I suspect I might regret that a tough when I come to paint, but it's a fun experiment!

Thanks mate.

I got an Anycubic Photon - I'm really pleased with it.

Prints are fantastic - if you learn to orientate them well they come out almost perfect.

I don't find the clean up particularly difficult - the impression I get from reviews is that folks from non-model making backgrounds sometimes come to 3D printing and are frustrated by the prep/post, but for those of us used to cleaning mould lines, fixing sculpts, cleaning resin etc. it's really not a hassle.

If I'm honest there may be a point in the future where I might want to pick up an FDM printer for larger terrain - resin is much more expensive. I would guess that the larger truck below cost me ~£4 to print. Add in the odd failed print, and learning the ropes and the cost is probably on a par with buying similar vehicles from somewhere like Brigade. That's fine for me, because it's about making things for myself, but it's worth factoring in.

I'm definitely having the most hobby fun I've had in absolutely ages though - next big step is to learn to sculpt organic stuff so I can make my own infantry.

It’s rare that I can post twice in such close succession!

Not much this round – managed to finish off another bounty hunter (man, I’m obsessed!). Love this mini from the command pack of GZG’s Islamic Federation range. There’s nowhere near enough pistol armed minis out there so I try and make use of any that I come across.

I tried a cheeky bit of OSL on this guy – looks a bit better in the flesh than it does here. These pictures have gone a bit blue actually, sorry.

Nice choice of colours!
And nice painting, in any way.

Very nice.

Difficult to believe it is 15mm.

I'm a bit jealous.

I want a 3d printer, hobby time and CAD-skills.

...and that bounty hunter is great as well!

Haha well I'm lucky that I have downtime at work sometimes and work from home ~50% of the time, and I try to get a lot done in short bursts (I paint consistently for half an hour before work, which adds up) so projects seem to tick along.

One of the things I've enjoyed about the 3D work is it doesn't feel like 'hobby time', it's a different activity, so I can just relax on the sofa and design, but it's still productive!

Man, that mini is awesome, and your printed Terrain makes me pretty jealous-in a good way.

I should try this half hour painting schedule myself. Seems like a good model.

Yeah it’s working for me - partly because it feels like ‘free’ time (instead just watching the news with a coffee). I don’t get any messy jobs done (cleaning minis, basing pruning etc) I generally just do one stage (basecoat, first highlight, whatever) if it’s a single mini or just do a stage on 3 minis if I’m doing a batch. I’m really tight for time at the moment, so it’s helpful.

Great work.  The light source is especially cool.

I actually used this mini as my not 'Dengar' Star Wars bounty hunter.

The miniature has a great Arabian quality.

Thanks for the info Jagg,
All I have to decide now is whether to get a pla or a resin printer. Both seem to have pros & cons.

Don't know if you know but there is a great scifi stl Ks campaign here,
Definitely worth a look.

As to painting, i prefer to paint in batches of 5 or 10.
One can paint quite a number of minis that way in a short time , off course depending on the scale ... but I find that 15mm is the most forgiving.

Thanks mate,

I tend to paint a singe colour or two on a batch (to help tie them together) then go in and finish each individual - it's rare I paint 'squads' or anything like that though.

Thanks for the link - I'm actually working on starting my own little thing at the moment so not spending any more, but there's some nice stuff in there.

Welcome Jagg,
There's indeed a lot of good stuff, I personally think its too good an opportunity to miss.
Good luck on your endeavours , then.

You said you'd like to do infantry.... scifi, I presume.....
One can never have enough infantry...... at least I prefer them to vechiles ;)

Any ideas yet?

Heya folks,

A a it of news - Blades and Blasters miniatures is now open!

It's a mix of 3D files for those with a printer at home and a either physical prints or castings for those who don't! A spin off of my constant experimenting, and hopefully a welcome addition to the sometimes waxing sometimes waning sci-fi scene.

I've put the first wave of things up live, with more to come soon.

I've also added a little newsletter sign up, which I'll probably put put monthly or so with new releases and the like.

Wish me luck!

PS - Not to worry, this thread will still be all kinds of 15mm hobby related, not just my stuff (assuming I have time to paint other things!)
