The Armies and Enemies of the Petal Throne
« on: December 20, 2006, 02:21:50 AM »
Hi Guys,

Just wanted to share a little project I've been involved in this last year and soon to bear it's first fruit. I have been facinated with the fantasy world of Tekumel ever since I first read a battle report in Wargamers Digest way back in 1976. The creation of Professor M.A.R. Barker, Tekumel is a rich environment totally unlike most other settings which tend to be inspired by Middle Earth or Medieval times. Professor Barker's creation stems more from Aztec/Mayan/Indian or Asian influences; the societies are as technologically advanced as the Romans or Imperial Chinese but as barbaric as the Aztecs. The setting was originally published as a role-playing game back in the '70s but has been "in development" since the 40's. Some of the oldest art dates back to the 50's.

While it started it's public life as a role-playing game the setting also has a strong wargaming background and history. Tsolyanu - the Empire of the Petal Throne itself - is surrounded by other nations of equal stature and is frequently at war with them. The project I am involved with is to bring a range of 28mm miniatures for Tekumel back into being. (There was an old range first released by Old Guard  and then Ral Partha back in the late-70's. )

If you are interested, I invite you to explore the Tekumel website. On it you will find more background information about the World of Tekumel.

The minis by Eureka are fascinating.

One of the things I've always wanted to try was a "Sungate" game (basing Stargate on Central American iconography, rather than Egypt) and these would be perfect for that! The open hands and elaborate polearms would work very well.

I also see these guys as being enemies for steely-thewed barbarians and Pulp Rocket Captains, or part of an Atlantean lost civilization discovered by a renegade U-boat crew...

I'll have some to send you in the spring, I'm sure. The first release date is January 22nd for the Legion of Ever-Present Glory. Then in April we have some Yan Koryani (the Gurek of Tleku Miriya I & II) and - with luck - a second Tsolyani legion (The Legion of Serqu, Sword of the Empire). The third release will hopefully be in June.
