Argonor's Dark Ages Stuff
« on: February 18, 2015, 11:09:23 AM »
I have started a Fantasy Viking D&D rpg project with my daughters, and given the nature of the matter, I was a bit in doubt, whether to put this in the Fantasy section.

As most of the stuff collected, built, and painted for the project, though, will be more or less historical, and because, as with everything else I do these days, it will also serve for historical wargaming, I went for this board, as I would like to keep it all in one place.

The girls creating characters:

Minis purchased so far:

The female magic-users are not Dark Age, strictly speaking, but at least the cloaked one will be playing a part in the rpg games.

Yesterday, I ordered the Gripping Beast plastic Viking Hirdmen, Anglo-Saxon Thegns, and Dark Age Warriors boxes.

Some esteemed members of this forum then helped me find the SoBaH 'Song og Longships and Ravens' list on the SBH Yahoo group, so I can start wargaming as soon as I have painted a few models, and, of course, I shall be aiming for full SAGA warbands over time, too.

I shall post pics and short descriptions of everything going on with these combined projects here, and detailed descriptions, and full AARs will be posted on my blog, as usual.

Soon, it is time to scratch-build some buildings...

I always suspected the dark ages could make a nice setting for rpgs. I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

I expect the project to develop into building a lot of stuff, like some settlements, some modular cave and/or dungeon pieces, some ships (I'll probably purchase models to that end), and painting both warriors, civilians, and livestock.

I will be a slow process, though, as I have other pending projects to look to in between.

I shall, however, as soon as I finish my 'It's Alive' Pulp project, turn my attention towards building some Viking houses - it should prove a nice father-and-daughters project, as the girls are both keen on using scissors, knives, and glue for various ends.

Sounds great and looks promising. :)

Definitely! After all, the progression was Dark Ages -> Poetic Edda/Beowulf -> LotR -> D&D. :D

Yes, I put slotta-minis on washers instead. Slippery slope...  :o

Are you referring to to the basing method, or the fact that I have finally actually assembled and based some minis?  :)

In case of the first, I don't think I am going to completely skip using (round) slottas (especially not on my hordes of Lord of the Rings minis), but these 2 somehow did not look right on slottas - and are going to be used with a lot of other stuff on washers.

On the subject of slottas/washers, I have been re-basing a lot of old GW skellies from square slottas onto 20mm washers to use in a God of Battles army, so more and more of my stuff go on steel these days.

Lovely looking stuff. Looking forward to seeing my boys get old enough to play something similar so will be nicking all your ideas.

I hope there will be a lot to nick  ;)

I am currently pondering about how to best make a hexagonal template for cutting out foam bases for cave-modules on my thermo-cutter (and what size I should go for), so any suggestions on the matter would be most welcome.  :)
