Javis grass mats any good?
« on: March 09, 2015, 03:21:48 PM »
Hey guys, I am looking at the javis grass hairy mats to use as a wargame mat. Size wise they are great as I can use two of them for ronin games and three for flames of war. But I was wondering what your experience with them was. I know they are meant for model trains so I figured here would be the best place to ask.

Do they roll away easily?

Do they stay in place and not slide?

Does the grass stay on them?

Thank you for anything you can tell me.

I had one... ten? fifteen? years ago which went bald relatively quickly from repeated rolling up and model movement. But obviously things have probably improved since then  lol

Most railway mats are designed to glue easily to boards though, so I wouldn't rely on it having any particular grip straight out of the box. You could always just pva it to some thin felt/fleece/whatever - that would make it stronger too. You could even just put caulk on the back to stiffen it, as long as you pin it down while it dries to avoid shrinkage.

I've got one that's about five years old and have used it three times?

The flock does come off quite easily with repeated use and gets everywhere  :(

If you can collect it, it comes in quite useful for other things though  lol

They are hopeless for this purpose.  The flock comes off easily and the sheet won't lie flat very easily.

They are OK for mounting on a board though for quick ground coverage.  I have sprayed mine with some mat varnish to keep the flock on and it works OK.

Thanks guys. In the end I skipped the Javis Mat on your advice and tried some place that was selling custom printed PVC banners instead. They look decent and worked out cheap too.
