Duel in the streets of an abandoned Edo village
« on: March 14, 2015, 10:27:02 AM »
Hi,

today (and over the following days) I want to show you how I've built a scene with some buildings from the Edo period.

If the subject reminds you of something - a movie maybe - you are absolutely right. And here is the miniature it all startet with:

It's another miniauture from the Kensei series...let's call him Bodyguard ;)

So this was the scene I had in mind:

And I got help from a company named Kawai Shokai - they made plastic kits in 1/60.

As you can see, the scale is a Little too tiny for 25/28mm figures, that is why I took some elements from These kits and not the complete sets.

Today I want to show you how I mad the Jishinban (watch house). Among others the hompeage from 3dchaya has a 3d-model from this building as pdfs for free download:

http://3dchaya.com/views/content/us/contents/page01_03.html

So I printed side and front view, scaled it up as needed and made a model out of card board and blackened it with edding.

Then I glued some wooden strips on this (walnut and balsa wood); I made irregular cuts to the edges of the strips, to give them a more organic look; the Balsa Wood was treated with a brass brush

changing the roof into a Wood layout, giving it some brown colour and adding the ladder for the fire alert

I put this buidling aside for further weathering and attended to the eel shop, which is next to come.

Thanks Mason and James!  :)

Here we go for the second building - it's the local Unagi-ya; the eel shop.

Again I started with model from Card board - the used red type is not the best...you will get Problems when painting white over it :(
On the left you can see my inital plan and on the right side the final version. It's a Little smaller to fit the Roof I took from a plastic kit.

After adding some wood strips, I painted the remaining wall with a very light grey and the roof with a bluish grey. As you can see there are some more parts to be added later.
Aside from some platic Roof for the front I built an additinal window frame.

Then I gave the buidling some used look drybrushing it with a light ochre.

I also added the sign, so everybody will now know about the shop. Next to the shop a giant empty bucket was set - former home of the unagi.
Again I used some black pigments for further aging.

The Background Shows the next building to come - the local inn.

Until then - cheers
Andreas

Lovely.
You have managed a nice, aged look to that place without making it look scruffy.

And that bucket is great.
I must source a great big wash tub for my own laundry soon.

Thank you very much for your comments guys, very motivating! Domo arigato!

So today I can you Show you the local inn.
Basically the same method - cardboard with Wood strips.

The window frame was built using 3 stripes as place holders.
The inn has a very low entrance and a panoramic window...of course it now is closed.

I used abachi-wood for the roof, which I cut into stripes and treated with a cutter knife and a brass brush

I added broken walnut stripes on the lower side of the house

Basic colour - clean yet:

after aging (using thinned ivory colour, drybrushing ochre and black pigments) we get this:

Adding some detail as a fallen sign, stones on the Roof secured by small wood planks gives the finishing touch.
So - the first halve of the abandoned edo village street is finished:
