Looking great. The metal rims on the wheels wear off paint pretty quick but rust and mud do a fair bit to tone down the glare of the steel rims so I would suggest doing the same with some brown and khaki paint.

As to the varnish effect, the real ones could be awfully garish as they used shellac as well as paints.

Yeah, some details could be highlighted in black, other decorations like printing and curlicues and such were often done in gold paint.

Looking good, though!

Coming along nicely! I would try to tone down the gloss a bit, though.  It doesn't look 'in scale'.  Do you intend to paint the 'springs'? They should be dark leather.  Yours look almost red.  At least you're farther along than I am.  I decided to start with something a little simpler than the stage, which is why I'm working on the Chuckwagon.  No horses!  :D

From what photos I have seen of stagecoaches, the colour of the leather straps can vary from beige brown to black. I may go over them and do some highlights, but I thought I'd keep them pretty much the same colour as the other leather bits.

Thanks for all the comments!

Tim, unfortunately I haven't had the time to do more. But tonight I should be able to clock a few hours, and maybe post some pics.

Not much progress today but two shots nevertheless:

I decided my 'pin striping' skills were not sufficient after a few tests, it's very tricky to paint thin lines, especially with gold. I could have done the stripes by masking them and then air brushing them on, but that seemed difficult as well. So in the end I found another way to do it: I cheated!

I used electrician's tape to make the stripes. First I painted some lenghts of tape in gold, and then I cut thin stripes and stuck them on. The tape is very easy to bend, so curves are no problem. Then I covered the tapes with a layer of varnish.

These aren't really very realistic, but I think they give the right effect anyways. After all, this is a gaming piece, and not a scale model as such. So I am happy with the simplified scheme.
