Early renaissance knights
« on: March 31, 2015, 01:12:45 PM »
Hi everyone, i started a new project, I wanted to depict a full plated knight with a cloth barded horse so I used a perry MMA over a fireforge teutonic horse, I also added a green stuff cloth skirt to give a more renaissance look, here's a few pics:

this one is just a test, and an unfinisced one (there's still no saddle, and I have to refine some things), I'm not entirely sure about the skirt (maybe it's too short), what do you think?

Good start indeed  :)

I did something similar with this.
I'm not a fan of the Fireforge horse heads though, so I gave the horse a Perry head swap too.

Great work! And I think you love painting, even if you deny!

I love doing kit bashing like this. Something to note when mixing horses and riders is that saddle harness styles are very different in 15th/16th century gendarmes versus 13th/14th century knights. (much like shapes of lances help pin point the specific era of the knight).

Cheers,
Fred

and that's the first commander on foot:

the 2 handed sword is the one for the tabarded miniatures (foot knights set), I removed the arms with a scalpel trying to reproduce the hilt but I'm not really convinced of the outcome, tomorrow I'll try to do better; for the rest it's Richard III head and a lot of green stuff, hope you like it!

Well it's been a long time, I was very busy but I slowly make some progress. The project evolved into a full France/Ferrarese force for the Italian wars (although I didn't forget the LOTR scenarious) so take a look:

This are the complete gendarmes, some months ago I had a revival of LOTR gaming so I added some shields (I'm kinda regretting that).

This are the squires/coustillers, they have been very stressful to make: I started with the horses, they're firforge 6 barded and 6 unbarded, I cut them in half and glued together so to have 12 half-barded horses; for the riders I couldn't use the perry MMA because of the left harms fuses with the bodies, so I opted for the foot knights, after repositioning the legs I covered everithing with the Green stuff skirt. For the arms I used that from fireforge templar knights but with armored vambraces ( perry MMA box give a lot of rigth arms to use).
I painted them so that every single one can be pared with a gendarmes.

This is the Duke of Ferrara Ercole d'Este, the horse is from perry miniatures, I maked the barding using a plastic sheet, the duke is a perry foot knight while the head is from the LOTR conversion kit.

and now let's go with the infantry, they're all perry foot knigths:

Pikemens, this can be the front ranks, I'm planning on making some middle ranks with unarmored/light armored arms, WOTR infantry can serve as back ranks.

longbowmens, this are supposes to be of the scots guard, by the time of Charles VIII they wore a pure white tabard, so I guess I'll add 3 plumes for make their signature green-white-red colours; I'm also not sure how to make the quivers, if you have any suggestions...

extras: 4 dismounted gendarmes and 2 with voulge (there're will be more in the future)

and then a final shot alltogether

For the future I'll make the archers and foot crossbowmens, I'm also planning an making the garde du corps using the same tecnic used for duke Ercole
Hope you liked it
