Saxon Church - the real thing
« on: April 04, 2015, 11:41:25 PM »
Although it is ridiculously close I have never actually visited Escomb church until last week. What a history, a saxon church, built from stones from a Roman fort, and still in use 1300 years later. The tiny graveyard has headstones going back to the early 18th century. I thought a few inside photos might be of interest.

Great pics Bezzo, you can't beat the real thing!!  Check out the Chapel of St Peter-on-the-Wall too.

Awesome, thank you for the photo's.
I wonder, the roof, would that have been thatched in the 7th century or came it already with tiles like these?

Wonderful images.

It's got to be worth a good goat a scratch build?

Thanks Bezzo - nice place. The walls are quite thick - reminds me of a medieaval chapel here.
What is the stone behind the altar? Looks like a headstone.

Just shows how long we've all believed in fairy stories. Having said that the church I was married in harked back to Saxon times... didn't bring me much luck though!

Coming to think of it there was a relatively recent article (I think in WI?) about modelling a Saxon church that looks a lot like the one you have posted Bezzo(?)

Fantastic!  What a beautiful little church.  There are so many little gems like this around the country, I need to get back over soon for another visit.

The beauty is it's simplicity. A wonderous building! with many a story to tell!
