15MM Chinese Junk (Painting done/March 6, 2016)
« on: April 11, 2015, 07:37:46 PM »
During my visit to the swap meet last Saturday I found the Disney toy junk (Empress) that was released with Pirates of the Caribbean, To World’s End.  It was missing its masts, sails, stern panel and rudder, but since it only cost me $1 I decided it would be a fun recovery project that would offer a little break from my currently long-term project, the FIW in 15mm/18mm.  Below is the repaired Empress.  I removed the cannons, sanded off the round shields hanging from the side and covered that area with a rectangular box made of Evergreen plastic.  I also removed the decorative sail-like wings on the ship’s side.  I added new masts and sails using Evergreen plastic and Milliput (yellow grey).  I added a new stern panel, rudder and stirring device (not based on any reality) also using Evergreen plastic.  For scale I’ve added a Blue Moon 15mm/18mm figure from my French and Indian War collection (it was handy since I’m currently painting my FIW collection).  I’ll give the ship a paint job when I have a better idea how I plan to make use of it.

I have a couple of these & one that is slightly smaller. There were a couple of sets done, they came with some figures that are about 28mm. But the ships are a better fit to 15s. The ones I have are sitting in my projects to do pile. I also have some of the other ships too.

HerbyF, I know that Disney marketed at least two ships compatible with 15mm for the release with one or more of the Pirates of the Caribbean films.  Obviously the Chinese Junk (Empress) was marketed with At World's End.  I don't know if the 15mm compatible Black Pearl they did was also marketed with that film or one of the others, but both ships are beautifully done toys and well worth the time it takes to repurpose them for 15mm use (really not much work at all if they are new/I get mine at the swap meet as broken toys so work is required).  The junk is the first one I have worked on, and I removed the guns because I will be using it for civilian purposes not with pirates.  My pirate collection is 28mm, and I used the three larger pirate ships Disney marketed for that collection.  Those are beautiful ships as well (2 variations of the Black Pearl and one of Queen Anne's Revenge).  They required a lot of work to repurpose them for 28mm use but in my opinion they were well worth the time and effort.  You can see what I did with those in my Pirate Gallery at www.warin15mm.com/Pirates.html

Rafa, thanks for the kind words.  It's always good to hear from you.  I check in on your website often just to see all that beautiful brush work... you are such a talented man!  Andym, as I'm sure you have heard (read) me say many times before, my swap meet is magic... week after week of treasures.  Yesterday (Saturday) I found the WizKids' Dwarven Steam Behemoth in perfect condition for just $1.  It will be great with my 28s, but now I am rambling.  As to the painting of this junk, that will probably not be done for awhile.  I couldn't resist the repair work; just had to see if I could make it usable again.  It may not be historically accurate to use this junk for a Vietnamese collection but I think I will use it as part of my Vietnam river traffic when I do my 15mm Vietnam War collection and that is still some time off.  Thanks again to both of you for writing.  Really much appreciated.  Richard

The main reason I'm holding off on the painting is that I want to use this little junk with my Vietnam collection (as yet unpainted) and whether or not the junk is appropriate for that I think it will look neat so I will probably use it accuracy aside, but the one thing I can't escape is the water color.  The Disney people sculpted bow wake on both their 15mm compatible Black Pearl and Chinese junk (Empress).  My normal approach to water is simply to paint it several shades of blue highlighted with a mix of blue and white.  Again, this isn't very accurate but its easy and it tends to add a little color snap to the environment.  But Vietnam presents a new problem because the US naval forces that patrolled the rivers of Vietnam were known as the Brown Water Navy which would make painting the bow wake blue too obviously wrong.  Given that I need to give some thought to what my "brown water" will look like in terms of colors used, and I'm just not there yet.

Since my original posting of the reworking of this Disney Pirates of the Caribbean Chinese Junk in April 2015 I have completed my 15mm FIW (October 2015) collection and have been working on my 28mm “Gangsters and Other Stuff” collection.  Consequently painting the repurposed toy junk has been off my radar, but last week I was in need of a little break from the Gangsters so I looked around for some fast projects that needed doing but wouldn’t take me away from the Gangsters too long… and there sat the junk waiting nearly a year for some paint.  I'm pretty happy with the results.  Hope you enjoy it, too.

I want to see this in action with a few "Mandarin duck" teams fighting off the dwarf robbers.

That looks great. I wish the toy was a bit bigger, then I could use it for 28mm

Freelancer, I believe that Mega Bloks makes a large version that would work with 28mm.  The downside is that I would guess that it is a pretty expensive piece if you can find one.
