Righto I found the pictures for the first 2 cars I finished. I cant say that I'm 100% happy with the weathering (the dust and dirt part) but I have spent enough time on them!

A classic "Interceptor" based on a 1970 GTO
I went with a metallic blue colour scheme and lots of rusty armour

Next is a "Gunslinger" used by my outlaw faction
I'm very happy with the weathering on this and the rusty right hand door.

The next 2 are proving difficult and I will need to repaint parts of them where I stuffed up the weathering.

I hope you all enjoy them.

Cheers
Kieran

I think these both look great, very battered and tough. :)

Did you use pigments for the rust?

A mix of pigments and paint daubed on with a piece of sponge. The paint was applied in the opposite order to normal - I started with orange and then went darker finishing with a red-brown

I like the effect you're getting. :)

I forget - what scale are Hot Wheels?

they are approximatley 20mm but they vary wildly. They are scaled to fit the pack.

Thanx, that gives me a starter for finding minis to match. :)

There are a bunch of really good companies that do 1/64 cars.  JADA, Johnny Lightning, M2, Greenlight, Matchbox, plus a bunch more.  The 'premium' cars come at the princely sum of maybe $5, so in every way this is a very affordable hobby!  I find the best cars to work on are the ones that come screwed together instead of using rivets.

Really love the rust technique, I plan to incorporate it into my next builds!

Yeah I think the scale varies. I have heard they are 1/64 but some are 1/72 and perhaps smaller, as it depends on the blister size. Next to a lot of my 1/72nd stuff they look small and I will try and take a picture next to a diecast.

Excellent work going on here.

It takes me back to the release of Dark Future where our whole group started customising Matchbox cars.

I think a good rule of thumb is that HW cars are only 1/64 when you are talking about mid-sized vehicles.  A Mini is more like 1/56 and a full sized truck or fire engine sized vehicle is more like 1/100 or 15mm.  I go to the other vendors for smaller or larger vehicles.

With the new Mad Max coming out and pushing the post apoc topic I thought I might dig out the matchbox again.

Thanks for the "naked" modding photos! I always found it difficult to add the "right" parts and your pictures give lots of inspiration.
"I'd like to send this letter to the Prussian consulate in Siam by aeromail. Am I too late for the 4:30 autogyro?"
"Uh, I better look in the manual... This book must be out of date. I don't see "Prussia", "Siam" or "autogyro"...
