Hi,

Can anyone suggest a resource, preferably in the form of a book with colour plates (online will do at a pinch) for the uniforms of the British, French, russian, Turkish & Sardinian during the Crimean War?

I notice that Caliver carry the following:

Turkish Uniforms of the Crimean War
FRENCH INFANTRY OF THE CRIMEAN WAR
UNIFORMS OF THE RUSSIAN ARMY DURING THE CRIMEAN WAR

Are they very extensive?

I have An Illustrated Encyclopaedia of Military Uniforms of the 19th Century, but it's sitting in a small box, among many, many other small boxes in my ex's garage.

I think that I may have the British and French Ospreys too..... again, sitting in a lonely spot in said garage!!

Darrell.

I'm not familiar with the Caliver books you mention, so can't comment on them. The Osprey MAA on the Russian army of the Crimean war is quite decent and will tide you over if you are not looking for anything too obscure or specific. The MAA"s on the French army actually cover the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 and will not be of much use to you.

One of the best resources on French line infantry of the Crimean War is the following article published in Uniformes in the early 1980's. Pacofeanor scanned it - which saves me the trouble of doing it myself - so there it is in its entirety, hotkinked from Paco's excellent blog :

The most valuable part of the piece above are the Vanson sketches : eyewitness renderings of what French troops actually looked like in the field made on the spot by then captain - later general - Vanson who served in the Crimea. I have a lot more stuff I can scan on the rest of the army : just let me know what you're after and I'll dig it up for you.

Re Sardinian troops, click on the link below and scroll down a fair bit until you reach the section on the Sardinian army :

http://souvenirsdutemps.vraiforum.com/t818-Annuaire-militaire-mondial-du-Second-Empire.htm?start=45

You'll find quite a few plates there on the Sardinian army, including these :

For the Turkish army, the Ottoman-Uniforms website can't be beat :

Thanks Arthur, you are a star that shines bright!!  8) 8) 8)

....very good of you to scan the article for me  8) :)

It looks as though some even more GWM than I'd anticipated will be bought next weekend then! I may even start with the French. I've got the Reece CD (in my ex's garage!) on the British which is excellent.

Now, what about those Russians?  ??? :) (I think I've got the Osprey.....????? No prizes for guessing where..... :'( )

Well, at least I don't have to worry about the Sardinians just yet..... knowing my luck..... They will get released as a surprise at Salute!!  :o :)

Well, Paco did the scanning : I merely hotlinked his scans here.

If there are specific French units you wish to do, just let me know and I'll dig up the uniform info for you. Mind you, if you're using the GWM Crimean range, they only do line infantry and chasseurs à pied plus a few Guard types, which narrows the research work down to a very manageable handful of well-documented uniforms.

Thanks to Paco and your good self then  8).

I am seriously thinking of starting with the French as this would alter my normal pattern of starting with the Brits, a behaviour that is rather curious as I'm not exactly the most jingoistic person one might meet!! Maybe on a deep dark subconscious level  lol (Actually, the thought fills me with dread!)

You're not alone...

BTW, Aly, will someone be carrying the French at Salute? I expect Dave T will be but I can imagine him selling out very quickly.... anyone else?

 ;D i hope so !!!!!!
Crimean winter french infantrymen don't exist in any ranges, and minis could be perfect as "garde nationale mobile" during the siege of Paris in 1871 !!

Hi Darrell...

I think Nick at North Star would be the best person to ask about Salute...
There is possibly still time to pre-order before the show...

All the best. Aly.

By the way I have found the Caliver books very useful also the NYPL digital library...

Yeah, I've sent him an e-mail but he's probably up to his ears in work prior to salute and I haven't heard anything back as of yet.

Hi Darrell

Not sure if you're still on the look out, but British Battles is a fine resource for text and pictorial references:
