Here's illustration of Berne bear from Schilling's Chronicle - showing Morat IIRC.
Yes, Michael's bear appears tad on the 'heroic' scale, based on this picture, but then you'd select the biggest, meanest one to take on campaign wouldn't you?

That's not the bear. Or not THE BEAR anyway. That's just his little sister filling in for him during his vacation.

Does anybody know if the Perries plan to do more Swiss packs?

I must join the chorus of not-that-excited about these new medieval Swiss... somehow they don't hold to the high standards seen from the Perrys... maybe these were done as a too quick side project?

But that bear does look quite ok sizewise, check out the following for a real 500kg brown bear, named Juuso:

Mmmdunno. The model is almost the same height as a human, measured to it's shoulder. (granted, a bit shorter if it's forepaws were flat on the ground) Even Kodiak bears are 'only' five feet (150cm) to the shoulder, and Eurasian bears are a bit weedier at about 110cm.

But if humans were shorter back then, and if Eurasian brown bears bulked up on a higher-protein diet back then (weird the stuff you can find while googling) and if it looks nice on the tabletop, it's all good. ;)

Well the Juuso the 500kg brown bear in the vid is one of the most biggest brown bears around and he has been on good steady diet for whole his life, thus the massive size. But having seen him/it personally, Juuso is also very very lazy type, can't imagine him breaking havoc on a battlefield... unless somebody would hurt his handler perhaps or Juuso himself, that is.

Further to my post on 10th May, I posted a question on the Perry Facebook page asking if they are planning more metal Swiss.
Michael Perry posted that there are no more new sculpts in the near future.

Simon (Painterman), also messaged me with the same information.

I got the same reply.... it looks as though Michael is concentrating on the Fallschirmjäger for Crete etc which is fair enough.... can anyone think of a better range of Late Med. mini's (including all the lovely plastics that is on offer?

Of course, if Michael were to produce more Swiss at some point i would be a very happy man!

Darrell.

My two boxes of Swiss arrived this morning and i have to say that they look much better when you have them in the hand than the photo's show.

I'll see if I can fit some into the old painting schedule and paint a few up! (Hopefully soon!)

Started to throw a little paint on the new Swiss. When done this will be an honor guard on a 60mm base that can be positioned in the front ranks or lead a column. Started on the bear this morning. Next, handler and horn blowers.

Cheers,
Fred

Excellent Fred  :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*

Funnily enough I'm painting up something as a favour at the moment that although not Swiss related, is not a millions miles away from this! Watch the Fantasy section for pics!!  :)

Yeah, I can see how the sculpting makes his fur a little rough hewn. I will say this, however. I collected a folder of brown bears before I painted him and if you've seen bears after they've been wet or in the rough, their fur can look all kinds of matted and clumped.

Its kind of an French impressionists idea of a brown bear but it works for me.

 :)

Cheers,
Fred
