Hupp n at em's Fallout - Big Boy Watchtower
« on: 18 May 2015, 08:08:04 AM »
Like many of you, I love me some Fallout  :D  And after following so many of your lovely project logs on this board and replaying Fallout 3, I decided it was high time for me to start a project of my own.  I plan on eventually getting some Brother Vinni/MessyArt models (more faithful renditions of the harder-to-imitate things in the Fallout verse), but for now, I'm sticking with models I already own or those that are cheaper to proxy, as I have about a month layover between now and when I start working full time.

No finished pieces yet, but I figured the sooner I start this log, the better.

First up, some GW rats, really the only useful remnants of a Skaven army that never came together...

Then some fuel/water objective markers (GW barrels and a mix of some resin manufacturer's and 21st Century Toys/Forces of Valor jerry cans)...

...and weapon/ammo stockpiles along with a super secret spooky canister containing who-knows-what  ;)

I'll preface this next image by saying I despise Games Workshop Orks, but I had a free one from a White Dwarf a few years back, so I hacked off the hands and hideous head and made something more interesting out of him: a Buffout-addicted Raider boss! (all bits are GW: hands/sword from the old Skaven clanrat box, head from the Cadian box, and oh I lied, the "shield" is an extra panel from a 1/72 T-55 kit).

Orks must have really awful posture, because before I added the Grenade Launcher and pouches, this guy was a bit, um, "bootylicious" to say the least...   :`

Attempting to make some armored trucks out of old toy german halftracks, though they don't really look like any historical vehicles I know of. Plastic is from old gift cards, because free.  Maybe they belong to the Midwestern splinter of the BOS?  They seem like they do things differently, plus I am from the Chicago area after all

Metal Cadian officer (now a security officer of either Vault X or Rivet City...) for scale

Next up, some sort of wasteland psycho or Raider boss or Mercenary/bodyguard.  This guy is from Aberrant Games' Rezolution range, the APAC faction.  He's supposed to be a magic user, but that has no place in the Fallout universe, nor does it jive with my general sci-fi sensibilities... so I stuck various knives all over him and called it a day.  Reminds me of "Millions Knives" from the Trigun anime.

I did mention his knives, right?  :D

Another Aberrant APAC conversion...I didn't care for the weird handle-blade weapon she came with, so I turned it into a mini flamer with some guitar wire, a Tau firewarrior grenade, and the flamer from the Mongoose Starship Troopers box.  Still need to file off that ridiculous anime-style necktie and sculpt some details to make her more Raider-y...maybe those Tire shoulder guards they love so much?

Speaking of the Starship Troopers box, I noticed that if you clip the headlamp off of the heads, it doesn't make a half bad metal helmet proxy.  So I used it on a few of my Star Wars prepaints -> Fallout conversions (quite a few of these incoming)

Need to greenstuff the right wrist still, but pretty happy with this one.  Pig Iron head and the AK is from the Wargames Factory Survivors box (most bits of the remaining conversions are, their more slender style mixes well with the WOTC Star Wars figs)

A cool customer...

That wrist device was too perfect not to use as a pip-boy.  This guy will become a Vault dweller wearing a Mexican-style poncho

A wasteland weasel.  Does that gun convince you as a 9mil sub? Or does it need a longer mag? I can't decide...

Female Vault dwellers

Lastly for now, an NCR Ranger.  Need to fix up that right wrist with some putty still.  The angle of WF survivor rifle hand was such that I had to hack away a bit of the arm to make it look right, so this one probably doesn't hold up to close inspection at the right angle, but I think the end result was too tempting to pass up

Thanks guys, I should have some updates in the next few days.  I'll also add that, as a project log n00b, any photography criticisms and suggestions are welcome.

interesting stuff you created there.

Gonna steal that objectives idea (I also have that GW scenery pack but never did anything with it because every item looks so gigantic...  :?)

Can't wait to see your conversions painted up.

Please do! I felt the same way, I didn't want to use them as freestanding scatter terrain because they don't weigh anything.  I figured this way they'd serve a purpose, and without getting knocked over constantly.  lol

I like the conversions you've pulled off, good mix of different sources. The barricades look like they'll paint up well too.

Re: Fallout...again! Update: Rusted out car test
« Reply #8 on: 23 May 2015, 07:47:38 PM »
So I prepared my diecast cars to be made into wrecks by removing the tires (and for those that required flattening, the clear plastic window inserts) and wrecking the pull-and-release mechanism that makes them go (don't think I can trust players not to send them flying into the terrain  lol ).

Now my question is, does this look weathered enough?  To me, it looks a bit too clean.  I used a cosmetic sponge and stipled on a darker and lighter coat of rust, as well as brown-washing the interior and washing the exterior with the darker rust color.  The interior still looks too bright, and the exterior still has too much blue in the crevasses, unless I'm overthinking it?  What would you guys suggest?

I'd agree about the interior looking to bright, I think modifying that will make a big difference.

Oh man
Nice conversions, and to the car my only critique would be the interior. Maybe take a dremel to patches of the seats to look like the lining is wearing off and then paint what's left as dirtied sponge?
My critique however is the pooling of the ink. You could get some weathering powder and just spread it randomly around the patches. c:

Got to put em up on little cinderblocks.  :-)

No fancy inks, just watered down paint.  :D  Very good point though, it's less obvious in person but it does still out doesn't it.  :?  I ended up glazing and drybrushing over in a different brown and it's harder to see now, so hopefully that fixes the problem, well enough anyway.  lol

I love this idea!  I have 9 diecast cars right now, and I'm a little hesitant to put them up on cinderblocks as I'm not planning on basing the cars, at least at the moment.  However, when I find some lighter plastic cars, I think I'll base them and put them on cinderblocks.  8)  I think a two 2x4 LEGO bricks stacked up under each wheel well and textured up a bit could look good.

Anyway, finished the first batch of cars: made sure to dirty up the interiors, and also used some brushwork and washes to get in those pesky cracks, otherwise it was all that sponge technique.

Also forgot I hadn't posted these, whipped them up a few days ago: an outhouse and a roadside camp.  :)

The rust on those bangers looks perfect.

Also, nice campfire. Looks like some non-newtonian-onna-bass-speaker kinda jazz going on underneath the morsel!

lol lol lol You've described it perfectly!  I was digging around in the attic of my garage (looking for legos for making lockers and other furniture, stay tuned for that...) and I found that bit.  I think it came with some Lord of the Rings toys from back when the movies came out.  The figures were action figure-like, but the scenery was put together using "not-lego" connections on the bottoms/backs. Can't remember what they were called or who made them, but they were cool in their day...

Edit: a quick google has revealed that they were made by Intelliblox. An example: http://www.amazon.com/Rings-Mines-Intelli-Blox-construction-system/dp/B001JPGDP6
