Shadows of Brimstone Review
« on: May 25, 2015, 03:27:24 PM »
I have been a long time fan and reader of H.P. Lovecraft and his weird and creepy tales. Whenever possible I try to collect his creations for the wargaming table so when I came upon some flying three-tongued snakes I was of course very interested. Some tracking revealed they were part of a new boardgame and thus I fell for the creepy charms of Flying Frog's Shadows of Brimstone game.

Great paint job on that Harbinger.

Unfortunately I didn't miss the Kickstarter and sank an ungodly amount of money into it ;)

I do like the game though and agree with your points on the figures, both good and bad. I am looking forward to the mountain of goodies on their way late this year though  :D
So many projects..... so little time.......

This one is on the list of stuff I'd like to buy, but so far I've resisted the urge. I have so much other stuff to paint and play...maybe if I delay long enough I'll forget about it. It does sound like a fun game though!

On another note, we recently entered into a discussion whether SoB is a war game or not. What do you think? Is SoB a boardgame, a war game or a cross over?

Board game with RPG elements, like Warhammer Quest was.

But then what - aside from the squared board instead of inches - sets it apart from skirmish wargaming?

I am not trolling mind. I am just struggling with the concepts and the perceived difference between the two genres. I am hoping for some defining comments.

Free movement is a big one for me but an easy one is what you are controlling. A skirmish game has you controlling a force, a board game of that type has you controlling one or two characters.

Have been playing SOB for a while & have enjoyed it immensely, as to things that set it apart from wargaming - its mechanic is very boardgame for one, the rules being very clearly defined & more abstract (a boardgame trait) than a more free flowing tabletop game would be. It's the RPG element that probably gives it its 'legs', that your character progresses/suffers setbacks increases its playability.

The figures paint up very nicely for boardgame pieces.  Seems like much better detailing than 1st edition Descent to me, although I haven't seen much of the 2nd edition stuff.  Easily as good as Zombicide.  I'm looking forward to seeing the expansion set models for SoB.
