Who can fight against ancient Germans?
« on: May 27, 2015, 11:39:04 AM »
Hi,
I’ve recently talked a friend into trying ancients after years of badgering and he said he likes the look of the ancient Germans, however I had my eyes more around the area of Greece/Persia/Macedonia
So who can the ancient Germans fight against I’ve had a quick look and can find the following (along with my thoughts about playing them)
Celts – Basically like the Germans but less psychopathic
Romans – potentially dull
Dacians – possibly too similar to the Germans
Sarmations – Funky but limited
So is there anyone else who could fight against the Germanic Barbarian horde? Hopefully someone from a more civilised part of the world ;)
Cheers
Andy

All that depends on the period you want to do.

I’m hoping to keep it more ancient’s then dark ages so limit to say 5th century AD (CE if you prefer)
I’m happy to go quite far back in BC (BCE)
I think he has got his eye on the warlord games ancient Germans if that narrows it down

It is a problem with all 'barbarian' armies. Essentially they can fight Romans, or each other. Some of the lucky ones get to be Carthaginian or Successor mercenaries or Roman auxiliaries. They still fight Romans, but they have pals with big pointy sticks, elephants etc.

I just have a couple of boxfuls of generic 'barbarians' for my warband requirements, and they've done the whole thing from being mates with Hannibal, to being hunted in dank Germanic forests, charging across the Sambre and riding around in Chariots rather hopelessly in Brittania.

Cheers
Martin

I think that other than the Romans, everyone else will be pretty similar to the Germans.

But that does not have to be a bad thing. I find that something as simple as giving your army leaders a name and a bit of a backstory, that you can build on after battles goes a long way to lend an army character.

If you aren't afraid of calling your germans sometimes celts, you could go raiding the greeks, when you call them goths fight against huns and all people of the eastern med, even persians. You could do play settler in england with angel (anglo) or saxon people.

I think the easiest way is to fight against ancient germans. They had a lot of trouble with several tribes. I think the name "ancient germans" is too general for these big group of tribes.
