Do both ideas, crane and thing 3, except the crane is suspending the turret above the hull for maintenance.

Nice build! Like it.

It's not big, or clever, but let's do it anyway

I like this option!

I also like the idea of some kind of Thing 3/crane combination, but if your heart's set on the couch and vending machine area, I'd love to see that as well.

The floor - I know. My plan was to finish all of the inserts and then do the floor, just to be sure where the paths, vehicle working areas and other bits would be. A bit unnecessary perhaps but I'm committed now. Rest assured, there will be dirt, lots of dirt.
My suggestion for the dirt is oily dirt.  It would fit the scene.
Or something a little more chaotic and jury-rigged, like this (noting it would have some work to tidy up the obvious disconnects around the turntable.
My vote
The second takes less space but will have the crane almost in the rafters, which might look a bit silly.
Like the idea of the broken crane and I think it could work for either of the above.
I like the idea but why confine yourself to the interior?  If it is sticking out the door possibly incorporating a tarp/tent shelter of some kind suspended by the crane it would fit too.  With the horded materials inside it would surly spill over outside.

Thanks so much all for the feedback - here is where I have ended up.

I have a crane. I've shortened it a bit more to fit it in and raised the height so it looks like it could have actually lifted the turret that it is now carrying. The turret is just loosely held in place for the photos. Finished job will be suspended higher and 'neater'. The crane also needs a few final bits of detail.

THING 3 is now pretty much done. Love these Rheboks from Curtis at Ramshackle Games. They have a lovely indestructible feel to them. Clearly I've tried to destruct mine a little bit.

And I've put something on the salvage trailer. Gecko from Old Crow Models. No idea where I'm going to put it but once I got a-makin' I just had to finish it.

Lastly there is the customer waiting area - thanks Raedwald! Again, not quite sure where it will go but I'm gonna shuffle things till it fits.

Very nice idea with the crane, have you thought of a catwalk  of sorts on the top of it?

I'm  starting to think you have found the Cornucopia  of Fobs and Bobs for all the extras little things for your builds, thinks that make you go Mmmmmmm  .

Been waaaay too long since I've done any hobbying. New job ate my life for a bit. Now re-establishing a little normality so it's back to the Junktown Hangar.

I couldn't quite work out how to fit the customer waiting area in and then remembered I had a side building. I quite liked the idea of having it overflowing with salvage at the same time so this is where I've ended up.

Also done a little more work on the gantry...

And I've built some jacks for Thing 3, using parts by Ramshackle Games

Now I just need to get back into the swing of painting. Spray job starts tonight.

I know that it has been said so often that it is starting to loose all meaning. But I am in absolute awe of you bitsbox, and your use of it.

I'm just stunned by all your work! Again and again is just awesome!

Just where to do you get all your extra detail stuff all those bobs and fobs?

Thanks all for the great welcome back and kind comments.

War Monkey, I have an obsession. I work harder at collecting bobs and fobs than proper miniatures. To be honest it's kinda out of control but I'm an old dog so it's too late to learn new tricks now. My bits boxes look like this. This is just the box of boxes.

And this one is 'tech spares'

The overall stack looks like this, and that's just the small parts. Bigger parts are in a few bigger boxes. I need to build Junktown just to run this lot down.

I know that it has been said so often that it is starting to loose all meaning. But I am in absolute awe of you bitsbox, and your use of it.

Thanks! If only it was just one box. Is Bitscupboard a thing? If so, I think that is what I have.

Lovely clutter.  Cannot wait to see this completed.

Thanks Snitcy. It's all about the clutter. As you can see from the nonsense in boxes above, I have so much more clutter I need to spread. The hangar is probably the most cluttered thing I've done so far, but I'm already starting to think about making the next project even more cluttertastic.

And on to a quick update. I've started to work on the outside of the side building. More weathering to do to tone down the various bits of lettering, but you get the idea...
