Painting War magazine reviews
« on: June 06, 2015, 11:44:29 AM »
Hi guys,

I recently bought all three of the Painting War series covering WW2 Germans, US and Japanese troops. I also got the french napoleonic book. Anyway I posted a review of them on my blog in case anyone was thinking about buying them.

I've seen a copy (well sort of half copy-it has every second page or there abouts) of the German issue on Scribd for anyone who wants to get a bit of a feel for the magazine

The only thing that I didn't like (at least in the German Heer one) it's the lack of a comprehensive list of all the paints used, right in the first pages. They are spread around the tutorials  :? But that's just my opinion  ;)

Yeh that's true. Make it easier for doing a bulk order  :)
The french one kind of has a list, at the start it lists how he paints all the major colours (so french blue, white for pants etc) and then as it goes through the individual figures it picks out the individualities with extra colours and refers to the earlier tutorials for the major bits

So I guess all the magazines are different. Anyone can tell me if the US/Japanese has that list?  ;)

They all have basically the same overall format:
Introduction
Painting techniques particular to the author
Skin/specific uniforms and equipment (goes on for a while)
Horse/basing guides
15mm painting guide
Rank and insignia pages
Somewhere around 30 odd specific miniatures painted

So I guess all the magazines are different. Anyone can tell me if the US/Japanese has that list?  ;)

The US/Jap one has all the colours used next to each thing that is being painted. None of the books has an overall list at the start but they use a huge amount of colours anyway so it'd be a big list. The US/Jap one also has several video guides on the PaintingWar website which describes the wet blending/glazing/washing techniques used. Pretty handy

Hope this helps :)
