Sun in Splendor Shields
« on: July 06, 2015, 10:20:11 PM »
Does anyone know where a person might be able to find shields with a sun in splendor motif similar to the Knights of the Blazing Sun from Warhammer Fantasy?  A friend of mine wants to have the shields match everything else, and he doesn't want to freehand the bloody things.  Ican't find anything, and that is frustrating the bejeebus out of me.

Looks like the headpiece on this:

"There is no known cure for the wargaming virus, only treatments with ever increasing doses of metal."

Isn't this actually an ols plastic shield as came with the marauder dark elves?
Why aim for gold if you can get lead?

Could press-moulding be an option? Maybe not the whole shield design, but at least the fiddly sun bit?

Had a quick look on ebay, there are some there...but it will cost you, and leave you with lots of unwanted other shields.

What about making some of your own and printing them on decal paper? Either that or get one of the guys who do custom decals to do some for you?

Not sure about the face, but it might also work to essentially print the two layers of eight pointed stars on paper or thin card stock to glue over the shield...

I did, but I couldn't find anything in the numbers we need.

I have been trying, but the figure is old enough that the undercuts are not very deep, and don't want to give up the details.

We are trying for that 3D look, but we may have to give up, or sculpt our own.

Another option might be to 3D print your own symbol, and the mould that as required?
It does mean perhaps having to learn how to make a 3D sculpt, but at least it's a simple project with a print-size that won't break a modest budget!

Have you thought of using blank shields and adding small "charms" ( like the ones on charm bracelets or pendants) if you check on Ebay you can find loads in "jewellery" making. They can be very cheap. Just check the sizes which are normally given in the description.
I found these straight away but there are 100's to look through. These are 16mm wide ( 19mm at the "loop" which you can cut off):

Or you could use something like these:

Huh.  These are workable options.

I know a guy with a 3d printer - maybe....hmmm.

Thanks for the ideas - if anyone thinks of any others, let me know.

3d modelling the shield with just the sunburst would be maybe 15 minutes work. Getting a face like that on it to look good, not so much.
Oh and if you need one printed in high detail (25 micron layers) let me know!
