Border reivers
« on: 19 July 2015, 09:09:19 AM »
Having spent many a summer in my childhood in Dumfries I got a serious infection of borderer as a kid. Once in a while it blossoms up again, such as now. I've found myself hunting through various ranges looking for border reiver minis. Started first with 15mm, but the pickings seem small.
Then started looking at 28mm. Found the lovely ones from Hokahey, but from what I've heard they don't mix well with other ranges, a pity as these are by far the nicest minis. Then there's the TAG range which seems nice, but seems more geared towards larger confrontations and lacks skirmish character, ie there are few sword and buckler. The reiver castings ones seem poor though have a good variety. Them there's warlord games plastic/metal reivers which though are for ECW could be made to work. Then there's the range from SGMM, the old vendell range, but these are on the wrong side of the pond and I don't want to pay a ransom fee to the post office to get them. That said they seem to be the ideal range.

So a few questions. Have I missed any ranges? Does anyone have a size comparison of the Hokahey minis against the TAG ones? I at one point seemed to find the same Hokahey range but for less, does anyone know where? Thirdly, are the vendel minis available from anywhere in the EU?

I personally like the old Jim Bownen sculpts available fro Hoka Hey now:

They're full of character. Personal taste of course.

Darrell.

Dijit, my thread on this very site has photos of Hokahey mixed in with Vendel and I also mount Hokahey Cavalry onto plastic horses because their horses only come in one pose.

Hope this is of some help.

I like the hokahey-minis, but was thinking about doing a kit-bash with the new Perry light horse and the warlord ECW range to make some mounted border horse skirmishers.

Outpost wargames services has a large range off Reivers. The figures seem a bit dated by todays standards but have a certain charm. They are also a great company to do business with. I used to have great chats with the owners wife whenever I ordered from them. She is a long suffering wargamers wife.

I have a load of them painted and some Foundry. have just ordered a sample pack from TAG and will do the same for Hokahey..
Will post pics here when have time.

I've got a number of the Outpost Reivers, I quite like the fact that they have a lot of the same figures figures mounted and dismounted, ideal for skirmish games

I personally like the old Jim Bowen sculpts...

Me too.

(Didn't recognise the name of the current seller though, so thanks for the link.  Thought they were carried by someone else.   ???)

It is unfortunately, I set it up a good few years ago with the chap from monolith but the period seems to have died off in popularity. I flogged all my figures off long time ago. Originally monolith then vendel with foundry swashbucklers mixed in. I also at the time expaned my games into Ireland as the vendel range came out. From this I ended up deviating into conquistadors aztecs and inca....again projects gone to ebay😁 jim bowen stuff would be my call as they do mounted and foot characters which are great. Captain blood used bicorne horse for reivers that I remember and they were rather good. Also casting room minis has a couple of swash buckler packs on ebay (foundry figure) which are musketeers with head swaps from thei swash buckler range.

There's always the Perry 40mm range which is superb!

Just a matter of persuading everyone in your gaming group that it's a good idea to go for 40mm.

No idea why they went for 40mm, however nice though the minis are.

Looks like I'll be going with TAG for fillers and foundry and perhaps Hokahey characters. Pity the vendell minis aren't available on this side of the Atlantic :/

Like you, I've come about 10 years late to Border Reivers as a gaming project. I'm mainly using the Jim Bowen 'Graven Images' range from Hokahey which, while quite 'heroic' in size, blend in pretty well with the Foundry stuff, though they are much heftier than the TAG Tudors. I've also replaced the original horses with an assortment of plastic ones, as Jeff has already mentioned.

Somewhere, I've got a box of assorted Vendel Reivers, ordered from Sergeant Major Miniatures about 18 months ago - some are quite nice, but the moulds are showing their age. Might end up sticking them on Ebay if anyone is interested, as there are better alternatives out there these days.
