Game of Thrones Project - GIANT added!
« on: July 21, 2015, 03:51:58 AM »
Hi guys,

For my Game of Thrones project, I am currently flitting back and forth between my seven kingdoms forces (Lannisters, Brotherhood Without Banners, Starks and Bloody Mummers). Most of these I have enough plastic kits to kit bash already, but I also want to make a Wildling force, and the Night's Watch.

I just received my Frostgrave models, and the Witch and Apprentice are perfect Wildlings - they are well rugged up in furs, and have a great appearance. The funny staff they are holding will be converted to spears or halberds;

The Frostgrave plastics should be useful too, with some 'hairy head' swaps from various ranges, but I want to save most of these guys for the Night's Watch;

But I need some bulk to the forces - well rugged up, and varied looking. Does anyone have any other suggestions for Wildlings? Preferably plastics. Also a good source of after-market fur cloaks would be great too!

Warlord Tribesmen of Germania are cool, but too many bare chests I think, which would rule out most of the box;

and the GB Dark Age Warriors are a bit plain, and not particularly warm looking either;

Thanks for your help!
Cheers,
The Baron

Sgt. Major (former Vendel) Hillmen? Sort of like ancient Germans with more fur. A few bare chests, but paint those as if they are clothed, or maybe even a quick covering of putty first. Not plastic, unfortunately.

Foundry's Viking range has a couple of packs of fur clad berzerkers that might fit as well. Similar issues as the Hillmen above, though -- a few bare chests and they're metal.

One more... maybe not the smoothest sculpts, but they're rough and fur covered...

I wanna suggest these from Reaper:
http://www.reapermini.com/Miniatures/Icingstead/latest/14603#detail/14603_w_1
http://www.reapermini.com/Miniatures/Warlord/latest/14600#detail/14600_w_1
But knowing Reaper, they may be on the noticeably large size. The woman, for certain, if you compare her to the base in the pics. Also the spears would have to be replaced with something... less cartoonish.

*Edit* Gah, those were already suggested. Sorry about that: I hadn't looked through all the links.

History viewed from the inside is always a dark, digestive mess, far different from the easily recognizable cow viewed from afar by historians.

Alternative has a nice range of fur-clad barbarians that are not too "Conan".

Also, Copplestone makes several packs of cavemen; they have separate weapons, so could be upgraded to medieval items.

Foundry ancient germans range would work very well. Take a look at zero twenty three marienberg thread

As an aside, the Black Tree Designs Ancient Germans paint up very nicely. They also do a pack of Sarmatians which could be useful:

For the Kyrtle, trousers and furry tunic look there are also the BTD Kurds:

And possible the Russian Smerd (although they may be too civilised looking for your tastes?):

Hmm, how about Red Box Games' "Norse Humans"? Not the cheapest or most numerous, but there are a few good examples there that might work for you (perhaps as unit leaders or other characters). They're metal though.

With regard to the Warlord Tribesmen of Germania, I might suggest that getting a few different plastic historical infantry model sets and mixing the parts is the way to go. That way, the bare chests you don't use can go towards making Dothraki or whatever later.

As for fur cloaks, how about these:

Are you looking to make them look similar to the HBO tv wildlings, or the book wildlings?  There was much more variation in the book, with the Thenns being more like bronze age europeans from my memory to the hornfoot clans which in my mind looked more like neanderthals as they went barefoot and in furs.

I don't think there is much in terms of plastics apart from what is offered by GB, wargames factory, warlord games, and the perrys.

For metals, the Lucid Eye cro-magnons are pretty awesome and would fit in well with some primitive wildlings.

Wow! Thanks for all the replies! Many options to mull over here.

Thanks for all the links - I think the blacktreedesign stuff is the most promising, but gripping beast have the odd useful model too. Oldglory are pretty dated sculpts, probably a bit too short, and their shipping to Australia is horrendous, so think I will pass on them.

I wanna suggest these from Reaper:

Thanks for the links - Reaper are too cartoonish I think, and also super tall. I'm going for a gritty look which doesn't necessarily work too well with some of their sculpts.

As for fur cloaks, how about these:

Redbox games are really nice, and would work for leaders. I agree about the plastic Germans, need to see what the mix of models on the sprue is like in terms of bare chests.   The anvil cloaks are massive and are meant to spacemarines, I think the maxmini ones are the same. I'm thinking around the size of the old GW 'knights of the white wolf' plastic ones.

Foundry ancient germans range would work very well. Take a look at zero twenty three marienberg thread

Both nice options! The beserkers certainly have the fur, but I can't help but feel they will freeze to death North of the Wall  ;)

http://arcanesceneryandmodels.co.uk/shop/lucid-eye-cro-magnon-hunters-pack-2-sct12-28mm/

Boom! I think we have a winner - they are perfect! Not plastic I know, but they look like they could survive in the cold.

I am going for more of the TV show look, but am not beholden to it - I think that there is a lot of scope in the setting to show some creativity.

Once again thanks for the links all of you  :D, I will start posting some pictures when the project begins!

Cheers

Well, they are reasonably big, and they are resin too... I assumed that you'd trim them to fit and putty the joins to the models anyway though. That said, the cloaks are not designed to go over the shoulders of a Marine, whereas I presume that you'd want something that your models could pull around themselves to wrap up warmly.

Another thing to perhaps consider is a mould. I presume that you are hesitant to sculpt fur yourself; hence your request for ready-made fur cloaks... But you could use a texture stamp like this one on a suitable piece of putty, and them trim and glue to fit. It's a pricey mould, but I guess you'd get a *lot* of fur stamps from it (thus making it worthwhile for a full project).
