The Pulp Dictionary - An LAF cooperative effort
« on: January 05, 2007, 04:43:46 PM »
Well, as Keyan Sark pointed out, we should really get down with writing up that "funny pulp terms & phrases" collection. I thought we could handle it as follows: I´ll write up a post including various sections, and we use the thread to discuss stuff, and you could add suggestions, which I could then incorporate - especially for french and spanish terms... ;)

A nod to the mod: If you think this should be put into the "Open talk" section, feel free to move it there.

Section One: Exclamations (positive)

English: Jolly Good! Fabulous! Marvellous!
German: Hervorragend! Grossartig! Fabelhaft! Ausgezeichnet!
Dixie Lingo: Yee-haw!

Section Two: Exclamations (negative)

English: Damn! Those damn (...)!
German: Verdammt! Zum Teufel! Teufel! Verflucht! Himmelherrgott!
Dixie Lingo: Tarnation! Aw, shoot! Dagnabbit! Damnation!

Section Three: Exclamations (general)

English: I say! Steady on now! Crikey! Pip-pip! Rather! (with a very long 'a') Tally-ho!
German: Schäferhund!
Dixie Lingo: Golly! Hoooo dawgies!
Well shut my mouth!
Get your cotton pickin' hands off me! (not politically correct)
Well Gaawwwwllllyyy!
eeewwwheee!
What in tarnation!
Dang Fool!
Dadburn!
Dagnabbit!
I declare!
Shut my mouth and call me silly!(happy, goofy, dopey)

Section Four: Technical Terms

English: English: Boffin (scientist), Kite or Crate (aeroplane), Adding turbo, dynamo, multi-phase type word in a long string of electrical/machinery type equipment*
German: Todesstrahl, Gefliegentersaucen/Flugscheibe/Rundflugzeug/Kampfuntertasse, Unterseeboot, Panzerwagen, Kampfroboter

Section Five: Analogies

English:
German:
Dixie Lingo:
Hotter than a tin roof on a blacksmith shack in August!
Faster than a hungry dog after a rolling steak!
Louder than a preacher in a thunderstorm!
Messier than a mad cat in the molasses!
Sadder than a lame mule at the Steeplechase!

Well, that for starters! If you go brainstorming and include new ones, feel free to post!

Cheerio, Schäferhund!

English: Adding turbo, dynamo, multi-phase type word in a long string of electrical/machinery type equipment

For example: Professor Kroon threw the switch on his latest invention, the hi-powered, multi-phase, turbo Dynamo!

Let me throw some American Southern pulp in here.

Section One: Positive Exclamations

Yeeee HAW!

Section Two: Negative Exclamations

Tarnation! Aw, shoot! Dagnabbit! Damnation!

Section Three: General Exclamations

Golly! Hoooo dawgies!

Section Four: Analogies

Hotter than a tin roof on a blacksmith shack in August!
Faster than a hungry dog after a rolling steak!
Louder than a preacher in a thunderstorm!
Messier than a mad cat in the molasses!
Sadder than a lame mule at the Steeplechase!

General form:

<adjective> than a <adjective> <noun> <article> <noun>

There are no American Southern pulp heroes. They can be sidekicks or comic relief, but are never the hero. Blame New York publishers, if you have to. The Southerner is always from Alabama, Mississippi, or Georgia. If you absolutely must have a Southerner be a hero, he will be from Virginia. He is readily impressed with technology, but will always seek to apply it to farming, fishing, or hunting.

For example: "You see that there flyin' saucer? I'll bet you could use that to fish in the middle of the pond. Hoooo dawgies! I'd be happier than a woodpecker in a timberyard!"

Quote from: "Westfalia Chris"
Vermaledeit!

this reads very strange, even for a native speaker. if you wanna speak it out, better scrap this word.
"I'd like to send this letter to the Prussian consulate in Siam by aeromail. Am I too late for the 4:30 autogyro?"
"Uh, I better look in the manual... This book must be out of date. I don't see "Prussia", "Siam" or "autogyro"...

Not sure which category this should go under, but for the dixie speak..."Y'all" is singular and "All Y'all" is plural.  How Y'all doin'?  All Y'all Germans is way to efficient!

Also the phrase "...like a tick on a hounddawg" can be applied to almost any analogy or phrase.  "Tougher to catch than a tick on a hounddawg"  Tighter than a tick on a hounddawg.  Warmer than ....you get the point.

Some other dixie exclamations:

Well shut my mouth
Get your cotton pickin' hands off me (not politically correct)
Well Gaawwwwllllyyy!
eeewwwheee
What in tarnation
Dang Fool
Dadburn
Dagnabbit
I declare
Shut my mouth and call me silly(happy, goofy, dopey)

All Y'all chew these over and I will fetch more faster than a tick on a hounddawg
