Custom dice for Pulp Alley: what symbols would you use?
« on: September 07, 2015, 02:38:56 PM »
Full confession: I love dice. All shapes, all colors, all styles. Especially if they're specially designed for the game at hand.

So here's a hypothetical:

What with the lack of those pesky dice roll modifiers to keep track of, all those numbers on dice used for Pulp Alley aren't really necessary. 1-3, of course, is a failure, and 4+ is a success, but symbols on the dice would do the same thing, and give things a pulpier flavor, so to speak. So how would you design Pulp Alley dice? I think it's a given that the dice have the distinctive Pulp Alley skull on three sides to denote failures. But what about the other sides? Should they just be blank? But that's just so....well....blank:?

So here's the question: If you were to design special dice for Pulp Alley, what symbols would you use? If any?  :D

I was talking aloud to myself. A habit of the old: they choose the wisest person present to speak to; the long explanations needed by the young are wearying.

Take into account the way dice cancelling works in combat, you do need to know how much you rolled on a 4+.

OOPS! I plumb forgot about that. Oh well, put three skull symbols on each die and leave the other numbers.

This is what happens when you're just getting into a game and haven't yet played it.

Plus the inevitable toll that old age takes on the brain.....

Never mind.  o_o

Happens to the best of us. I guess you could do a skull for fails, and then pips going up from there, starting at 1. That's still a lot lower numbers to keep track of when cancelling dice.

1/2/3=blank
4/5/6 = skull with a number inside?
Works on a d6, but would be fiddly on a d8 or d10...

My special d6 have a Indy hat and whip on the 6.

 Fiddly, but doable....

From Q Workshop. Beautiful, but expensive.  :o

You could do skulls with the 1/2/3 inside them, and the other numbers normal, with a suitable font. Shouldn't be too difficult.... :D
