Fantasy figs and terrain for SobH, KOW etc - 2nd cottage Finished!
« on: September 23, 2015, 09:29:33 AM »
Hi guys

I've been chipping away at my large collection of Reaper Bones figures and also some GW Skaven. I have about 150 Reaper Bones figures, and about the same number of Skaven so this thread will go on for a while.

Reaper Bones Bugbears
Very cool figures with lots of character, and I converted one of the guys to have a spear instead of a club. Some of the detail was a bit soft and I cut off most of the studs on the armour as they were poorly defined and too hard to paint. Apart from that they were good to paint, but every time I looked at the I saw something else that needed painting! Eventually I got there and I'm happy with how they came out. I intend to use these as a Songs of Blades and Heroes warband but they might get used in my KOW skaven army

Completed SoBH warband

The Boss

Tony

Jim

Johnny

Eric

More soon

Cheers
Kieran

Great painting! Love the shading, the traditional color schemes, and hey, I just love bugbears, the heros of goblindom.

Thanks guys

Next is a sample Skaven figure from the Island of Blood boxed set. A lovely figure and more in the style/pose of the older Skaven figures. I tried out some colours and techniques like rusty armour/weapons to see if it would work for an entire army and a quicker way to paint. I like the finished result but the picture doesn't show it well.

Reaper Bones Wizard

This was from the first KS I believe and I swapped it for some Bones2 KS figures. Its a great figure with well defined sculpting but a BIG figure. I had just received some new paint colours and decided to try them out on the figure.

The basing on both these figures need some finishing as I cant decide to go with a basing scheme for down in a dungeon or on the tabletop.

Looking good so far. Coincidentaly I also just painted a set of bugbears to use as Ogre Berserkers in KoW. How do you plan to use them?
Why aim for gold if you can get lead?

I'll use them as stand-ins for Rat Ogres in a Ratkin army. Maybe in the future I will do a Orc army so they will be good for that I think.

Awesome, and I too, like the Tre Manor Bugbears (have some sitting on my table half-painted right now).  The best bugbears Reaper has.  I may pick up one or two more.  Also, they're big fellas, so I think they make the most of Bones material (which suffers as figures get smaller).  A quick dip in boiling then cold and they're solid.

Thanks guys, I will try to update this regularly. :o

I started on some terrain as I enjoy making terrain (more than painting figures) and although I have lots of ambitious plans, I thought I'd start with some simple walls. I also wanted to try making stone walls brick by brick, which is something I have seen here at the LA site.

Stone Walls

For the walls I used some foam from a model airplane shop as getting pink/blue foam is hard here in NZ. Plasticard was used for the bases.

First I cut up some strips and lots of individual bricks

Next I put them into an ice-cream container along with some scoria rocks (volcanic) which are quite sharp, and shook it hard. This dented the "stones" and rounded the corners a bit.

Next I glued them on using PVA one layer at a time. I sprinkled a bit of fine sand over the walls while the PVA was still wet,  so it went into the cracks in places.

Then I painted them a classic grey colour and followed that with lots of drybrushing. i also added some brown ad green washes but you can barely see them. Finally I covered the base with caulk and flock and some bushes I made. Also I added some patches of moss using some green flock to the stone work

Finished walls

Thanks
Kieran
