That is a great idea.
I have begun to do something similar for commanders. In stead of having them on round bases I have begun to put them on half rounds to attach them to the rear of units. So they don't get in the way of combat.

That sounds like a very interesting idea! I wish that i had thought of it as I'm not very tempted to do the same. I don't think I could take the stress of rebasing though.

Have you got any snaps of the half =bases next to the units perchance?

Kind of makes me wish I had thought of it before!  o_o

Too late no though as I've started on rounds and I'm not going to rebase them (again  :'( )

lol I will be tempted. But after all the rebasing some of these fellows have been though, I positively refuse to rebase them veer again. touching up the parts of the models that were damaged was soul destroying. At the same time it was a wonderful excuse to paint up more  8)

The last week was a its and bobs sort of week on the painting table. I finished a few pieces that were destined to hover around in perpetuity..........

Still, it's always nice to document little victories no matter how small :)

More scholarly prattle and pictures on my blog here:

The third unit on what will be a seven or eight unit army (with plenty of room for more as well as Norse Allies!). Then there's an entire Norse army to paint up to match too!  o_o

It's been great fun mixing and matching the miniatures in the units, most of which contain about four or five different manufacturers.

There are a load of images and the usual waffle on my blog here:

My studio is chaos at present thus no large table shots of anything much at all. I took the opportunity to find some time to cram in an old GW mat and some resin terrain pieces to take these "scenic" pictures of my Anglo Danes as they stand thus far:

Lovely stuff.  I have done the same half base for my Winter King Hero’s and Leaders...think it was the gents at L.O.A. That offered that up many years back for their Napoleonic Wars figures if memory serves.  Excellent paint jobs and wonderfully based sir!  Keep them coming!

Those are lovely. The colours bring the figures together beautifully, and give the feel of a unit made up of individuals. Really great.

Lovely mate, the army is coming along nicely.

What did you use for the stakes

Cheers

Will do! I'm trying to to concentrate too mush on the "end game" as that is often where, at least in my personal experience, low morale creep can begin to manifest  lol

Thank you for the goodly words Ingarsby. There is a right old mix of miniatures and manufacturers in there so it's nice to see that you have noticed the individual make up on the units- makes it worth it as that is the effect I was looking for.

Lovely mate, the army is coming along nicely.

What did you use for the stakes?

The terrain is all Grand Manner, mostly bought about 20 years ago and only given a brush up last year!

Probably the finest collection of Dark Ages miniatures I have seen  :-*

Thanks Gareth mate!! your kind words are very much appreciated :)

I'm lucky in I've been collecting 'Dark Ages' miniatures for a very long time so I have a lot to choose from which has helped give the army the right sort of 'flavour'.

Quick update just to mention that I've done a step by step Shield painting guide for those who are interested on my blog.

They're all Early Medieval shields and it's the same technique I've used on all my hand painted Anglo Danes:

Quick pic, plenty more with detailed step by steps plus a few other ideas.
