Scratch-built houses for 40mm 'Sharp Practice' games
« on: November 11, 2008, 05:47:22 AM »
I've just finished two houses for use in 40mm Sharp Practice games.  I scratch-built the walls from foamcore board, and used the roofs from two 1/72 Italerei kitset houses I had on hand for smaller scale games (the roofs of these kits are removable, so no problem to switch them for whatever scale game I'm playing).

Here's a couple of 40mm Perry riflemen entering a two-storey house:

And here's its accompanying barn/farm cottage (it has a large open wagon door on the back - that's why you can see the background through the window!):

Here's a rear-view of both buildings, with a couple of 40mm Perry French to give an idea of their size:

Here are the buildings with the roofs removed, so you can see the simple interiors:

The top floor of the bigger house is also removeable, to allow for fights involving men on both storeys:

And here are the original 1/72 Italerei kitsets that I used the roofs from (ignore the police armoured cars in the foreground!):

I used the same overall technique to build and paint these houses as described in an article I wrote a couple of years ago for the Kapiti Fusiliers website on making 25mm houses:

Very nice effort! Like it.

You only need a couple of olive and orange trees to place them in the Peninsula {Spain/Mediterranean area]!

Thanks for the comments, guys.

The walls are foamboard, coated in PVA glue and sprinkled with sand from the beach.  When dry, this is painted ochre, then drybrushed yellow, and finally drybrushed white.  Simple!  The exposed stonework is texture art printed from the computer and glued on prior to the PVA and sand operation.

The armoured cars, incidently are resin kits from Transports of Delight (Dutch Rijkspolitie Shorland) and I think from Verlinden (LAPD V100 Cadillac Gage Commando).  About a decade ago (before rejoining the hobby of wargaming) my hobby was collecting model police vehicles of the world - these are only two of about 4/500 of them, all now boxed away in a cupboard!

I like those kind of buildings, as they can be used for the Spanish Peninsula, SCW and the Old West in Mexico and Texas.

I have actually been buying bits and pieces with the intend of building houses using foamboard, even with a Logan foam cutter, never seems to be the perfect cut. I read an advert from the US about Foamwerk, a set of foam board cutting tools that looks very good, but as far as I know none of those are available in the UK.

I bought a Touching History Book by Paul Darrel and it was reading that gave me the idea. But I liked your idea of using texture art for brickwork from the PC, its only by reading what others have done that give lots of ideas (and shortcuts!).

Cheers and keep making them!
