Breaker one nine, this here is rubber duck
« on: September 27, 2015, 08:02:26 AM »
Having just rewatched Convoy, can anyone think of a good rules set to play an 18 wheeler big rig vs police car game?  Dark future might just be adaptable but its going to need roadblocks and rules for crushing police cars between rigs.  Of course it could also be used to run Smokey and the Bandit games too

My current thinking is 6 or 10mm as that let's 6x4 tables equal a huge area.  I considered that possibly the gear and acceleration/deceleration rules from formula d might be useable but I'd need to change the collision, shooting and cornering rules.  I'd also need to do d some good 6/10mm vehicles
Smile!  It's not that bad!

One of my abiding game memories is of a monstrous 3-team Car Wars game played at Gencon (when they were still at University of Wisconsin-Parkside). Two teams trying to run their convoys into a secured zone, with the Wisconsin State Police  (baaaadly outnumbered) trying to stop them.

The game runners had kit-bashed N-gauge railroad vehicles to make the vehicles, and everything was laid out on a 12' table with a highway cloverleaf and overpass about 1/3 of the way along.

I ran the WSP aerial unit "Green Thunder" and about five minutes after I showed up on-table, every air-gunner unit in the criminal convoys opened up on me. I crash-landed on the Chicago Skulls' command van with full ordnance still on board...

I think Car Wars in 28mm will take a ton of room and play too slow myself.

I wasn't thinking 28mm, the board would be too small unless you used a rolling road board format.  Hence the 6 or 10mm thoughts.
Looking at car wars, I want something more stripped down, it's not going to need that much in the way of vehicular weaponry.  To follow the spirit of Smokey and the Bandit, Convoy et all, the only real gun play is by the police so rules for passenger shooting or pedestrian shooting might be required.  Of course as I've typed this I've just remembered The Dukes of Hazzard, it's going to need canyon jumping rules as well (obviously police cruisers will always fail at the attempt)

Maybe basing movement of x wing type movement might be an idea, turning then is affected by the speed the vehicle is travelling in a straight line.  The only consideration then would be acceleration/deceleration

That would be clever! You could even adopt the maneouvre dials for a certain vehicle (class).

That was my thinking, instead of stress manoeuvres though use an acceleration or deceleration token with hard, standard or none in either direction.  Certain manoeuvres could only be used dependant on which you did.  Obviously u-turns, handbrake skid turns or chasm leaps would also involve some sort of test

Some sort of manoeuvre dashboard...

dial on the right with different turns, colour coded for the fastest speed they can be attempted at, on the right is acceleration/braking and a slider at the bottom showing your current speed, this is adjusted according to acceleration/deceleration at the end of the turn.
Obviously this is a rough draft, i need to look at the physics of the vehicles involved.  Might 'borrow' the idea of driver skill from x wing as well, otherwise the running people of the road trope isn't going to work, this could also affect manoeuvres, some sort of narrow S manoeuvre to weave and block the road from chasing vehicles.  I might also need to change the turn manoeuvre so it covers bends between certain angles to allow models to follow roads (something x wing doesn't have to do)

Yeah, but I saw Michi's truck...   That isn't a 6/10mm beast.
