Display cabinets in the UK. Anyone know a good supplier?
« on: October 23, 2015, 05:22:33 PM »
Well, I have just about filled up the various cabinets in my gaming room with figures, and have more to put away...

I've got one useful remaining wall space around 80cm high x 60 cm wide, or 70cm x 70cm (the sloping ceiling makes it tricky! I can go taller and narrower, or lower and wider!)

I can find lots of cheapo glass fronted display cases on Amazon and eBay... But they're nearly all only 9 or 10 cm deep. Which really isn't deep enough - that's like only 3 figures deep  :(

Anyone got any recommendations for UK suppliers of display cases, freestanding or wall-mounted, with a reasonable depth?
(I've already got a LIDL one, which is a bit more useful at 15cm depth - but they only seem to have those in stock once in a blue moon, and I need another one for the space in question... )

All leads gratefully received. Thanks  :)

Mine are all Ikea "Billy" bookcases with the additional glass doors, don't know if they do any that would fit your requirements - I glazed over your dimensions as I read them as I am far too tired to engage brain at present

IKEA. Best price, they look decent.

Bespoke would look good, fitting under the roof nicely  ;)

Or failing that, another shout for Ikea.

I've got two of the Lidl ones I bought a couple of years ago and still haven't got round to putting them up.

Another Ikea Billy bookcase user here - I got the glass shelves as well as the glass door.

The theory was that any lighting would be able to reach all the shelves if they were glass. I'm sure it will work, but I've not got around to installing any lighting yet ;D

Thanks gents, for the suggestions.
The Toyman ones are not cheap, but look the most likely option - thanks Deedles. At least they appear to have the option of slightly deeper shelves. (The problem with most of these 'collectibles' display cabinets is that they have shelves only 9 - 12 cm deep: enough for 3 ranks of 28mm figures at best. Just too shallow :()

The ones I bought (many years ago) I got from local auctions. As an example one very solid cabinet (approximately six foot tall by four foot wide & a foot deep, with windowed doors) set me back £15 and £10 delivery. It is very pot luck as to what is there on the day & if anyone else wants it, but definitely worth a try.
In more recent time I have made use of 'Free Cycle' To those who have not heard about it, it is a Website where you register (locally). People offer stuff they no longer want/need for free. you have to have donated something before you can claim something, e.g. I got rid of a big filing cabinet & two computer tables with chairs that I no longer needed but was then free to claim thing I did need/want. It is also possible to put in requests e.g. Has anybody got  a cabinet of the following dimensions....
 Hope this helps.

Thanks has.been for the suggestions.
Yes, we're on Freecycle (although mainly for giving stuff away, not getting more!) so will give that a try.
One of my best friends was an auctioneer and ran his own sale room for 20+ years, so in fact, I did get my first ever display cabinet from him - it was an unsold freebie otherwise heading to the dump.
The problem is, I don't really want old-fashioned, dark wood, floor-standing cabinets - and that's the type of antique / second-hand cabinet that you generally get at auctions.
Anyway, thanks again for the suggestions - I'll keep looking. Or wait until Lidl restock theirs again... They seem to carry them around Christmastime most years, so we must be coming up to the right time of year again :)
