WSS Austrians; Paint suggestion for Pearl-gray
« on: October 23, 2015, 08:25:37 PM »
Have begun a project to add an Austrian group to my WSS armies. Wondering if there is a paint shade that matches the "pearl-gray" you read about in uniform coat descriptions. Thanks ;)

Hi screwgunner. I painted my 15mm Austrians by dry brushing them white over a dark grey base colour. Then I painted the crossbelts with a second layer of white to make them lighter/brighter than the uniform.

White undercoat.
Thin black wash
Thin white for uniforms. Almost a dry brush.
Ivory for straps etc

Thank you everyone. Will try the drybrushing technique.

From owning a few such items pipeclay seems to give a much purer white in comparison to 'white', essentially undyed and thus rather off-white wool, which Austrian (and many other 18th century) uniforms were made of. Bleaching as well as wear and tear might alter the uniform colours, but leather was regularly re-whitened.
So I would paint it the other way around or at least use the same tones.
