@argilev.: The Thälmann Battalion was made of german-speaking people from Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The flag is probably in french because the International Brigades were trained in France. For me it´s good to know that some germans fought AGAINST fascism (and they fought brave). I´ve stolen the flag-design from the Anglian site, hope Nigell will forgive me
Yes indeed. Thaelmann Batallion [see I have no umlauts] was german speaking! and really they fought against fascism very bravely and honoured very well their name.
As most of the International brigadiers.
The international brigades were organised a bit on speaking language basis.
Thaellman was german speaking, Dimitrov was slav speaking -the organisation was here on company basis level- and so on. apparently greek was supposed to similar to slavic language and was included in the dimitrov battallion where they couldnot communicate with anybody else. later they moved alongwith the americans.
What it puzzled me is that: why a german unit had a flaf in french and not german!
this doesnot spoil the superb of the flag and the figure!
