Ancients scale - Wargames Foundry, Crusader and Warlord Games
« on: October 27, 2015, 11:00:41 AM »
I have been looking at the Ancients Scale Comparison pinned thread, but I am still unsure about how the minis from Wargames Foundry, Crusader Miniatures and Warlord Games (both plastic and metal) mix together. I already have the Imperial Roman Veterans plastic box set from Warlord Games, but want to add some more ancient civilian style types to a project:

Can anyone help me with pictures or information?

Saucy Jack, the imperial romans from wargames foundry mix well with the imperial plastic ones from Warlord.
The crusader civilians may be slightly taller but i think they go ok with foundry as well as the ones from warlord.
The foundry civilians are taller than your plastics and the others mentioned.
If need be i can search for them and take a comparison photo if helps.

There are two major "schools" of Romans in 28mm: 1) One to match the small Early Imperial Romans sculpted by the Perry Bros. 2) One to match the tall (and chunky) Romans by Mark Copplestone (and, as an afterthought, Steve Saleh).

Warlord Games' EIR range was to match Foundry's EIR by Perry, i.e. #1. Their Republican Romans in turn were 'retrofitted' into Foundry's 'Caesarian' range by Copplestone, i.e. #2.
Crusader complemented Foundry's Gladiator range first. Their figures match #2 best.
Foundry's own range of Roman civilians was sculpted in the style of #2; perhaps to partly resume a – now lost – range for Spartacus' revolt by Copplestone.

PS: If someone can take comparison shots in the style of the ones shown in our "scale thread", please share them. I'll happily include them there.

Thanks both of you  :)

Some photos would be very nice if someone has any.

Seems like it will be difficult to use the Crusader minis and the Foundry civilians with the Imperial Veterans that I have. If there any civilian ranges that will fit better?

If you don't place them side by side on the same base, you should be fine anyway. And only Warlord's civilians are particularly small in comparison.

That said the latter mix well with Foundry's Indian/Afghan civilians, that look suitably ancient, too - and were sculpted by, guess who, the Perrys. ;)

And i think foundry has 1 or 2 packs of civilians to go with the EIR by the perrys.
I will try and post some comparison photos this afternoon.

Steve Barber makes smaller 28mm civilians, likely to work with Warlord.
