Koyote, how dou you paint your rocks? Just black + more white + more white, or dou you use specific greys? I'm asking becuase I like how they turned out :)

I begin with black primer and a dark brown (GW's Rhinox Hide) base coat.  Next, I dry brush with olive green (Vallejo's Olive Grey), then a medium grey with a blue tint (PP's Greatcoat Grey), then medium grey (GW's Codex or Dawnstone grey), and then light grey (GW's Administrum Grey).  You don't want the layers of highlight to completely cover the last layer, so each successive layer of dry brushed highlight is applied a bit lighter and with greater focus on the edges and highest points.

When dry brushing, its a important to give layer a little bit of time to dry before applying  the next layer.

Finally, I apply brown ink (GW's Agrax Earthshade) to the deepest recesses and around the base of the rock. Sometimes, I apply a bit of watered down brown ink to the center shallower recesses.  If needed I may hit just the highest edges and points with one more dry brushed layer of light grey (GW's Asministrum Grey).

Very nice work! Will you mount it on a "base?"

Thanks, everyone.

I don't know when or if I will base the tower. Even without 'bases', my 4Ground terrain looks pretty good when set up on my cobblestone mat.  Then again, I 'based' my other stone ruins...

Also, basing the tower would let me fix a mistake made during assembly.  The tower wall sections were warped so I had a hard time getting them fit together properly on the foundation.  I was able to force them into the right shape by fitting the pieces together and holding them in place while the glue dried.  Maintaining the correct shape required me to apply a bit of pressure on the model, which more than once made the assembly come apart in my hands.  After several attempts I finally got it right, but I was so focused on getting the walls to fit together properly, I failed to notice that I had failed to properly align the tower door with the steps and landing (see below).

If I were to mount the tower on a base, I would place a pile of rubble adjacent to the landing at the top of the steps, so that it appeared as if part of the landing had been destroyed and was now piled up against the side of the tower.

Shiver me timbers! Looky what arrived today, my Black Scorpion Miniatures pirates and Aintsy Casting sloop.

I hope to have them ready in time for the release of Ghost Archipelago.

That is hot Koyote!  Can't wait to see what you do with it.  I have to build mine out of crappy old foam and other junk :) .  I think it will turn out OK but the "crappy old" part is the crap measure/plan/layout faze which is less fun than actually making and it is getting old.

For others interested in ships (and given the possible new game later this year,  who wouldn't be) these might be of interest.

Wow. Thanks!  I just ordered one large galleon and one small galleon.

What I like about the Dark Ops model is that you don't really need to paint them.  I'll paint the masts and whatever rigging I add, but I'll probably leave most of the wood as-is.

I find it odd that the small galleon has a ship's wheel and the large galleon does not.

Also, the small galleon will look a lot better with a railing running around the main deck.  The really low freeboard combined with the lack of railing makes the model look odd.  I'll have to fix that.

Here's yesterday's progress on the sloop. The hull, mast, bowsprit, and metal bits are part of the kit. The rest, I added. As you can see, I have a lot more work to do.

Now I need to figure out what to do for the yards, sails, and rigging.
